Kristen ❤️ ! Hoping the Houzzers can help you ponder/solve this? In the meantime,

    Blackmail? Bribery?

Extra Hmmm Turkey Treats this Thanksgiving?

I love Sigrid’s idea, but it’s possible the cat might get booted!

Ps without taking the sofa apart, I’m afraid not 💔 However — it’s got GREAT lines! The pillow style detail is a classic. Until you really dig into it, how about a suede slipcover in a chocolate hue?

Also — under a slipcover, out of sight, out of mind, and eventually it can be moved somewhere else?

But keeping it is LOVE, so, up to you and please don’t feel badly, I live with this ….

    I really do.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all you Houzzers popping out if tge kitchen on break! 🪶 Day ❤️!

Any adjustment to it will cost more than the value of the item. It's better to get him to fall in love with new pieces, though sitting on a marshmallow is hard to overcome.

He's never going to agree to something like this.

Find an item that has a feature that he might covet like a reclining feature. Otherwise, consider divorce.

If you live close to a Living Spaces, they might have something he would consider.

If you're not able to make him fall in love with another loveseat, just dress-up the one you have a bit... and centre the framed art with the loveseat!

Lipstick on a pig! There is no dressing that up!

As Abby suggested you could try a slipcover - one piece since the cushions are attached. A fitted stretch type thing. Wayfair has this one in a variety of colors. You can check if size would work for you.

    Amazon has similar. Read reviews.

Or... you could do a loose fitting sofa cover. Shabby Chic.

You can get the same look as the color linen shown above by using a canvas drop cloth. Just wash the drop cloth a couple of times to soften it up. You can do a search for ”no-sew drop cloth slipcovers.”

Or... you can have a ton of fun with throws. Boho (Super) Chic. :)

    Style + Camouflage. :)

You need to show us the entire space the "marshmallow" occupies. Sometimes you need to divert the eye from the problem with great art, other pieces, new rug, change in paint color if the problem piece needs to stay. Please provide photos of the entire space from all four sides.

Meanwhile here are visual diversions to move focus off couch:

Long, attractive coffee table/trunk; throws, pillows, rattan shade (or could be art) behind couch, attractive side tables and lamps.

Patterned rug to pull the eye away from couch. Art in background to focus on wall.

Patterned rug and wide coffee table with books and interesting objects:

Interesting gallery wall, tall plant, bold floor lamp, side chair seating, sofa pillows all take the focus off the couch.

You haven't shown us the entire room. Sometimes a change in layout can de-emphasize a problem piece of furniture.

Honestly, I know in a marriage you have to pick your battles, but that sofa is downright awful. I couldn't live with it. Is there a man cave that you can move it to?

That is quite a piece. If your husband absolutely loves it, I’d work on rejuvenating the leather so that it looks as well cared for as possible. And then I’d refer to it as “Grizzly” going forward because, really, it looks like a bear. 😊

It looks like a brownie and marshmallow got into a fight. My condolences. I don't think there is any fixing it up. I don't think the slipcovers will work with this shape and might make it look worse.

I cannot see a fix maybe a sale to get whatever you can get toward a new one.. IMO hubby's have not mush decor sense mine wanted a recliner in my LR and so he got the recliner but in the basement where he soon decided he liked the LR more than the recliner . Sometimes you just have to have achange . Take him shopping there are lots of comfy more stylish sofas .

Not going to lie and say that it is pretty. I have the identical sofa in my very contemporary condo and it bothers me every single time I look at it, but this is what DH likes, so I am keeping it. He's way more importantto me than a pretty sofa . I let my kids crawl on it so it will tear very soon....

It's in rough shape, so I don't think there is much you can do to "fix". I like the idea of the sofa cover/creative blankets if you have that boho/lived in vibe in your home, but just keep in mind it will always look a little disheveled and messy.

It clearly needs replaced, and I'm certain you could find something else just as comfortable. If he is loving the broke-down super soft feel, try getting him to try a deep seated high quality leather loveseat that will start out amazing and also just keep getting better with time. If he has an emotional attachment to the loveseat, maybe you can get him to move it elsewhere? Like the basement or a workshop or the garage?

Another downside of using any fabric on it--since it's leather, the fabric will keep slipping off. I don't think anyone is going to be happy with that.

  • last year

If you have room for a full size couch instead of a loveseat, maybe you could sell him on the naps he could take stretched out on a new couch.

It is "beyond the pale". Could show us the entire room? I I like your floor. Carpet? Cork?

Maybe a rearrangement of furniture could help.

If all else fails, thank him for keeping the sofa because now you have all that change in your wallet and maybe this is the time to buy the one thing you have wanted for so long:

And, it will match the sofa.

To me, this is one of those things that make a house a home. I agree to center the art above Grizzly. Then snap a good photo of him enjoying it to remind him of his favorite when it is ultimately moved out.

the goal of compromise in a joint living space should be finding furnishings that you both like. not a great sign that one person refuses to aim for mutual happiness…

Research leather restoration…. Fluff up the cushions so it gets back in shape, it sure looks comfortable and for some comfort takes precedence over cosmetics.

Sorry Abby no it does not have great lines and what is that dark piece of art have to do with this dilemma . Anything you add to this is I agree lipstick in a pig. And BTW OP coming back to answer questions is what you do here if you trully want help. BTW next time get a sofa too not a loveseat

  • last year

This post is actually a perfect example of why OPs abandon ship here, on a regular basis.

Whether anyone here likes it or not... these big puffy sofas exist, and people still do buy them and use them. This is not just a 1980’s thing. So obviously, there is a market for this, and obviously there are people who like these pieces. OP’s husband is apparently one of these people; and she made it VERY CLEAR that her husband is not interested in parting with it. So all the “truthful” - ie insulting comments - including the ”lipstick on a pig“ mantra - is basically less than helpful...

If you don’t have anything constructive and/ or positive to contribute to the conversation - please, FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO.

I tried to offer the OP some options - and all of my options were shot down by a number of the posters here.

FYI: PEOPLE CAN AND DO USE SLIPCOVERS ON LEATHER. And you are seeing a tight closeup shot of this piece, which makes it look much bulkier than it is; if it were shown in the context of the overall space, some here ’might’ see that it has a shape, that if covered, could be downplayed, in terms of the puffiness factor. There are also ways to SECURE FABRIC so that it does not slide around as much on leather. Plus, with throws, etc. - they do not have to be in place ALL THE TIME. And I suspect that they do not spend 24/7 sitting on this sofa... So, there are times that it could be covered with some throws, and that might improve the aesthetic for the OP. And the comment about the throws looking “disheveled”... Well, one person‘s “disheveled” is another person’s stylish... It’s a look. Look it up.

I really don’t think this OP was trying to ready the space for an Elle Decor photo shoot. She was simply trying to find some solutions that could work for her and her husband.
