I’d remove the bench, wreath and art above vent (which I’d paint same color as wall).

Suggest connecting to the foyer and living room’s feel and add two brass pendants, a green runner, and a large piece of art on the long wall.

While you are at it, add more fun/impact in the powder room.

Little narrow in my opinion for wainscoting, it will definitely make it truly narrower and feel even narrower and a bit claustrophobic.

I would remove the bench altogether. Its too narrow, and could be a trip hazard if someone is in a hurry or carrying something to the garage. No wainscotting. The hall is too narrow for that. Keep it light and bright. I like the picture, that Lynn Nielson posted above. I dont know if a runner is necessary for your life style or not, but, if it isnt, I wouldnt put any rugs there.

You seem to have nice art in the adjoining entrance, place more art on the walls. As suggested by Maureen, install more decorative flush mount lighting. Also paint the vent the same colour as the wall. Sounds like you'll be replacing the runner, I suggest a longer one that goes the length of the hallway (yours seems to stop mid-way). Having white wainscotting with lighten the area.

If you absolutely need a bench, I suggest a lighter looking style on legs.

As Lyn suggests....same white, different finishes: ceiling flat, walls eggshell, trim semigloss.

As someone else mentioned before, the hallway is quite narrow. So I would avoid any furniture on the way and I would use the same color on all the walls, including ceiling and vent. I like the current color. Trims look nice in white - as they give a bit of movement/ contrast.
I’d add a carpet that is as long as the wall with the doors, and stops before the living room. On the plain wall, either a big colorful piece of art or a collection of pictures. From the ceiling I suggest pendants - two should be enough - so that the high ceiling seems shortening a bit.

You clearly have a fantastic sense of style and great taste. I would follow some themes from the rest of your rooms into this space: everything in it's place, formal, with a touch of whimsy.

Paint the walls a neutral and the ceiling a great shade of blue or green to play off of the other colors in your front hall or living room. Mount two or three of the same brass or gold fixtures to pop against the ceiling color.

You don't have paneling elsewhere in your home so it would be odd to have it here. You don't have room for a bench, might brush up against art when carrying things from the garage, seems too narrow for molding - so let the ceiling be where the visual interest happens.

I only have paneling in the dining room which is not particularly connected to the hallway! I would have loved to extend the wainscoting to the foyer and up the stairs but I cannot at this time. I love the repeated brass pattern and definitely doing that. I wish I could paint the ceiling but it’s connected to the foyer, kitchen and family rooms, and I promised my husband this would be a tiny project 😬

Dana Mary, your house is lovely! I'm on the 'no bench' team. I can't figure out a good reason for it unless you expect a waiting line for the powder room. I also agree with others' suggestion of no runner and painting the vent cover to blend in with the wall. You do have a great wall for art!

I understand well the need to taper down a project! Then I say, just go for a succession of two great lights that are so beautiful you can't keep your eyes off of them. I'm such a fan of Visual Comfort. I'd start on their site. Many of their pieces are too contemporary for me - but even those I can find appealing in the right situation.
