Sory but IMO any dog with velvet anything is a miss or sure. I have always owned leather and dogs and will continue to do so. I aslo really dislike sectionals and youa re now going to a different style which in my head would never have a sectional. I see no 70 lb dog in that pic but even those guys will total velvet really. This is in my head French transition style , is this your plan too IMO if fabric is the plan I would want a much less delicate onwe with dogs

It’s a performance velvet not traditional velvet. It’s meant to sustain pet and kids. That picture is just too show the style of sofa not my home.

Well do what you like why ask. IMO no way to get dog smell out of fabric unless you clean it often and I think velvet in any form does not stand up well to constant cleaning .

I have inexpensive velvet chairs that my dog constantly rubbed against like a bear. They clean up very well.

I have a performance velvet sofa and chair, and we have two cats. Sofa is cream color and I keep a soft taupe sofa cover/protector on it. My cat tossed his cookies a couple times on it and I was amazed how easily it cleaned up with no staining. There's no avoiding the pet hair no matter the furniture so a good vacuum is a must. Difference for you maybe is that your dog goes outdoors and may bring dirt on their hair/paws, so I suggest you use a sofa seat cover when not entertaining.

I'm not a decorator so no comment on sofa style being considered. We're in SC and I don't find velvet to be hot since the home is climate controlled.

I had a set of velvet couches for over 20 years (with English Setters) and they were durable/looked great (in living room, so not used every day). I liked them so much, bought two for our family room (dog curls up next to us). Velvet is easy to spot clean when things happen (remains on surface for a bit), needs vacuming, keep out of direct sunlight, and for long term care, just ask about/look into.

Thought the rooms below have a light Florida feel and with the right sectional, would feel french transitional.

I’m in very hot Texas and have two olive green performance velvet sofas. They aren’t any hotter than any other fabric I’ve ever had.

We have cats, visiting neighbor’s cats, and a dog on them regularly (dog sitting) … again, no more issues with stains or odors than other fabrics. It also holds up well to me, as I’m clumsy and spill things often. :D

I'm not getting a French vibe from a velvet sectional.

When I moved from the North to Florida I 86d all my velvet and switched to seating with slipcovers so they can be machine washed when necessary.

The room below would be French leaning with slipcovered seating and French casement pieces and accessories.

Not all velvet is the same. Years ago I used a very expensive Schumacher velvet, picked by a designer, on some dining chairs. One of my kids spilled some water and the velvet was ruined ... looked like someone had spilled acid on it! Since the designer had picked it for a family friendly home, she paid to have the chairs re-covered in a more appropriate fabric.

Since then, I make sure to test any fabric swatches by trying to clean them with water and see if it damages the fabric or dries back to normal.

The OP asked about the pros and cons of velvet performance fabric, specifically related to heat and dog smells. Some of us, including you, shared our experiences with it. The OP posted thanks for the input.

They’re already working with a decorator — they weren’t asking for decorating advice from us.

I think there’s a difference between cleaning up small “ spills “, Vs odors from a dog sleeping on cloth upholstery for hours every day, making contact with a large area of the upholstery, seat and back, possibly different positions at times. That’s probably why you’re seeing a number of examples of using removable, washable dog covers or throws for everyday. Of course that varies with the dog and its lifestyle! So it’s up to you to decide how your pup “ uses” your sofa and what you’re willing to do to protect it, to really clean it, or to tolerate whatever evolves.

1. I think odor really depends on your dog and how odiferous they are. Some homes you walk in to and can smell dog. Others, not. My dogs have never smelled up upholstery.

2. I too was concerned about velcet in NYC summer heat, so didnt get them. But I have no cemtral air. If your house has AC it should be fine.

Another reason I didnt get velvet with my last dog is he was a super shedder. I got performance velvet samples and they were literally a dog fur magnet.

Room nd Board makes great performance fabric. Their furniture is likely not French enough for you, but they do sell yardage.

I am not rude he asked how we thought this would work and a majority say probably not but to say not was not rude . When someone tells us the style then we comment on that and I agree a velvet sectional in my head no way in the style of space mentioned . I ansered the question and the OP was offended can't fix that
