The horse portrait is very dramatic which I like for that area. I would not have a round table or a console with ottoman under it. The round table seems too bulky unless it’s tiny & then it’s useless. No one will pull the ottoman out to sit on it there. I would try these things out to see how it looks:

Tape out or mock up with something you already have - a 5’ x7’ area rug running across the space. 7’ is what you said width is but I think 4’ x 6’ might be too small. No idea what colors you have in home but with the art, flooring, door colors, a patterned rug with black & white or cream would work. The pattern will add some texture to the entry.

Raise the horse art so bottom is above light switch & center between stair railing start & corner,

Get a very narrow - no more than 10 - 12” deep console & a bit longer than the art - maybe in black to match the frame of horse art. That length shouldn’t block stairs if you center the console under the art. If you use that entry often, put a bowl or plate to use it as drop point for whatever.

Place some greenery in pretty metal pot on table to bring some life to area.

You don’t show your hanging light but I assume there is one. If it’s too small or too plain, updating it is a relatively easy change.

You could consider a small console table or a demilune table or cabinet to save on space.

5x7 rug sounds good to define the space. there is no hanging light. demilune table is what i was thinking too, didnt know it had a speicific name to it. I really like the idea of doing this under the window. maybe change the window treatment and do bamboo roman shades...that way while coming down the stairs in the morning its a nice visual treat. and even when walking from the hallway to the front door also you can see that. maybe add a full length mirror to the wall where the artwork is now so that pathway to the stairs is also clear. what do you all think?

I would start with getting a larger rug that fills more of the space and has some pattern to break up all the square and white. I might add a roman shade to that window just to soften it up. What is behind you in the photo a hallway?

Do the stairs go up and down? The table cannot go there and I would not want it in front of the stairs, Im thinking it needs to go on the opposite side of the room. do not paint it a weird, half way up accent wall.

I would use the stairwell wall for art instead, draw the eye up the staircase on entering.

I would do this simple fix to the top of your door to balance out the height difference.

I think a table is just going to be in the way and look junky - like furniture for the sake of decorating a tiny space instead of for a useful function. Find to do so in a larger area - not at the bottom of the stairs.

Instead of horse pic, hang a mirror with sconces on one or both sides and tiny ledge beneath if you find a need for a table like surface.

On the wall across from the mirror, hang a large vertical piece of artwork. It might be slightly off center from the mirror - maybe more centered on the railing post. Hang a picture light on it.

Find a great rug. Maybe it had leather binding or a natural jute or sisal.

If after all of this you still want more pizazz, paint the back of your door a color - perhaps a moody lovely grey. Keep the window treatment simple, though something fabric.

I love the art it has a great feel in the space not cluttered no mirror that reflects nothing but that bench does not work at all. I would do a shalloe console there Hang the art so the bottom matches the bottom of the window. As for anything else I need to see the space next to this like the LR to advice style . Right now I would do a nice glass and metal console with maybe a pretty turquoise glass bowl and be done since you really can't put anything inder the art . IMO the art is awesome the door ppretty boring and yes you need a larger rug.

Nothing under the window, especially no furniture. Furniture is right in the way when you step in the door.

I would prefer a narrow shelf to be placed under the artwork (the artwork should be hung at the same height as the window).

A classy large rug and light fixture. No funky paint. Done.

Would suggest a larger rug that covers most of the floor area. Would suggest a traditional oriental rug style. That is classic and can introduce much needed color. The table you have below the window is too wide IMO. Unless you need a table as a key/mail drop I will suggest to remove it altogether. Perhaps replace it with a small tree in a pot that should bring in more texture.

For few who asked what opposite side looks like…it’s a plain wall that leads to the hallway with narrow pathway of 3.5ft wide.

You could bench that you currently have if you use that door all the time you could put shoes under it and on the middle Shelf unless you can get another one of those you can build it up then you could have a plant in the corner on top of it unless you find a different kind of shoe cabinet that you can store shoes in it they have those storage shoe things I seen some hallways that had a 6-in bench made by their staircase that they stored their books or shoes and stuff that they had to take with them the next day and they hung their coats there

I think your floors are beautiful and I would hesitate to cover them with a rug. I agree with roman shades and keeping the art work. I would not put any furniture in the area, with the possible exception of a single, transitional-style chair (preferably black) angled in the corner below the window. It could double as a drop zone and also a place to sit and remove shoes.

I love the idea someone made about just a chair under the window. the long wall adjacent should have a large, long mirror - it will expand the space, increase the light, and be soooo useful. You should look for a really special chair - prehaps an antique, ornately carved chair - you can mix styles by using antiques so well. The long hall could be a whole picture gallery - use similar frames as for color or material and all matted or all not matted or barely matted to provide unity. I like finding a million different lovely gold frames or silver frames. They would each be special, but still be unified enough . But definitely for utilitarian needs - mirror and chair. Chair would make more of a statement then a bench. No rug.

If you use that front door for entry daily you need to rug at the door or you can fall on the floor and it can ruin the floor
