The wood does add a pretty detail! The ambiet lighting is important, and I'll suggest a couple of floor lamp options I love. It would be great to know the style of the rest of the home or any inspo pics of rooms you love, that will help narrow down suggestions!

Also, especially in a darker room, you do need to layer in several different types of light. Overhead lighting is important for general room brightness and function, and then layers of ambient and task lighting. You usually want about 4-5 points of light around the room for balanced and flexible use. For example, from what I can see of this room, I would do a flush mount ceiling light, the table lamps on either side of sofa for ambient lighting (or a coordinating table/floor lamp), and then an additional floor lamp specifically for lighting a task, like reading, next to the chair.

In addition to lamps, I think a lighter color rug would definitely help lighten things up.

Features in your room are absorbing light - ceiling and floor. I note a canister in the ceiling. IF you’re willing to install additional cans it seems the best way to illuminate the space. Our LR/DR are on the north side of our home. We installed 4 cans in each on individual room dimmers. Table lamps serve as accents.
