I am almost 80 and for me dark rooms are oppressive and for sure a dark brown is not what I see in that space . Trends are IMO for young peole who follow every trend to death. Maybe strat with a big declutter to see what it is your mom really wants from the space . I cannot think a sectional is the answer and there are beautiful Tuscan colors that are not brown I think a beautiful sage green could be awesome alonf with somme improvemnt in lighting since as we age we generally like a better light . I see track that is very harsh lighting ans that tells me they need better lighting . Maybe lean toward this palette for a real change but still Tuscan

Maybe consider a darker color for the walls and replace the rug with something lighter.

Get rid of ANY RED on the walls.

Keep the red confined to just accent pieces in the room.

Start with your sofa fabrics that work with the rug. Then post those on the rug for best paint advice. Never start with paint - start with the soft furnishings/rugs etc and then select paint.

Here are some colors I think look great in her space.

She's planning on replacing her sofa with a sectional.

This is truly the first step. Get the sectional and use it to inform the wall color.

Because the odds are slim to none that the wall color chosen out of the blue (pun intended 😁) will be the right color to make the new sectional look it's most fabulous.

What color are the window blinds?

I am thinking a latte will pull it all together and not be so dark…will go well with the rug and window blinds..you could also try matching the wall color with the blinds to make it more cohesive.

Look at Ramie..it came up on the color match…would love to see if your parents are open to pulling some blue into the room? with the warm latte walls it would be a nice accent…and it is in the rug.

If replaceing the sofa..I would do a warm neutral performance fabric…and match the drapes to that color..so wait until sofa fabric is picked.

If the rug hasn't been cleaned lately, consider doing that before finalizing color choices. It may be brighter than it looks at the moment.

Home interiors with ease- thank you for your input. Here's a mockup with your ideas. Is there an alternative to the ivory/latte curtains you'd go with? Or do you think the monochromatic look is best in this space?

I have almost this same rug! It's in our bonus room and I had the walls painted the same green that is in the rug. It's Ben Moore Nantucket Gray (not gray at all, but a soft muted green). The color goes really well with dark furniture like the cabinet you've got, and the dark wing back chair. This isn't my room pictured... I used this as inspiration when decorating my bonus room.

When selecting sofa and most likely new side chairs make sure they can sit down and get up easily. A sectional would only have arms for support on extreme opposite ends. A standard sofa with substantial arm support for standing and sitting might work better. That also brings to mind the coffee table, round or oval have no sharp corners to bump into. A hassock with a tray might work as well.

Ac Lb..I would get the room painted and new furniture added into the room and pick drapes last…but I do love drapes blending with the wall color.
