How do I paint this?

last year
last modified: last year

I think I'm going to paint our library walls. I've been considering for quite some time painting the wall-to-wall bookshelves in this room, but after playing around with the SW color visualizer, I've kind of fallen in love with the color Library Pewter (the name is merely coincidental) for the walls. I may leave the bookshelves white or paint them the same color as the walls eventually, but for now I feel I just really "need" this color on the walls. Below is the current color (SW Accessible Beige) and the mockup using the visualizer to show Library Pewter. The library does not have doors but opens into the landing from the stairway with a curved arch and rounded (bullnose?) walls. Without a straight line to follow, how do I paint the walls in the archway area using the Library Pewter? I envision turning this into a total cluster you-know-what, and want to do it as cleanly as possible. Any thoughts?

In a house I worked on we decided which color we wanted the arch interior to be and then did a cut line immediately to one side of the radius, so there was some visual "wrap" of the color of the other room at the edge. In one case it made sense for the hallway color to continue on the face of the arch and a thin edge of that color to wrap slightly into the room that was a different color. In other cases the opposite may be true. It depends upon which you see as the "primary" space. It looks like you might want to stop the Library Pewter just at the radius of the next room.

Ahhh, that looks quite nice. Thanks, Pal!

What brand of tape gives the best line? I don't typically use painter's tape, but in this case I'll need to. I've read some folks recommend Frog Tape. Any thoughts?

Wishing you steady hands and I think it’s gonna look terrific

That color is very similar to my master bedroom - except a bit more saturated. I'm getting ready to redo my primary bedroom (need a new paint color for walls) - but it will look nice in your library!

I actually am pretty good at painting rooms - but I have flat walls + casing/trim on all openings between rooms. I would probably mess that up - although @palimpsest has provided you with good tips!

I use frog tape and similar to palimpsest I will place the tape, paint the edge of the tape with the color that is under the tape so that it seals the edge and any bleed under the tape is the color I want going under the tape, then I paint the intended area with the second color. It produces perfect lines.

To get a nice clean line I have used Frog Tape, which I smooth down very well. Then I lightly paint along the seam with the current wall color before painting the new wall color. Any paint that possibly seeps under the tape will be the color on that should be on that side of the tape. Then I remove the tape before the final coat dries.

This method is similar to Pal's method of using the acrylic matte medium.

Frog tape has a higher rating than blue tape..but...either will do. Love the pewter color you chose! Very nice! Happy painting!

Use Frogtape and run over it with a plastic putty knife, credit card, etc to make sure the edge seals down well. I keep reading online about going over it with a wet rag, but there's nothing on the Frogtape site or package about that, and I'm not sure what it's supposed to do?

No painting technique suggestions, but love the color and think it will make for a very cozy library!

I agree with Teeda about pewter making the room cozy. When I visualize a home library I see darkish which makes the room cozy.
