Black Leather sofa in coastal home?

last year

Help, I need (2) new sofa’s in my bayhouse. Purchased light fabric when we bought the house 6 years ago. We live here full time now and we have a lot of company. We are retired and thinking to switch to leather and hopefully will be the last sofa we have to buy. Having said that I am struggling with a leather color. This house has LVP grayish/driftwood color flooring, a very light gray paint in the walls, white trim. A lot of windows so light and airy. Our next house will not be on a bay/beach access, and want to be able to take sofa to next house. Reading all about leather and think maybe black or ebony might be best color to not show a lot of use and go with a new decor. My problem is I can’t find any ideas for black with a beach decor. All my accent colors now are different shades of blue and I think black would be ok but sure wish I could see examples.
Would love professional and/or other opinions or direction to a site with examples. Thanks

Thank you for your ideas. I was hesitating to go with brown because we just downsized and sold our other home last May. I had 2 nice leather sets (in 2 different rooms) that I got rid of. Hate to tell my husband I want to buy brown again, haha. And yes nice leather is pricy. That is what I had😩. I just did not want it at the beach. And now that I need to replace some I want to use in next house. Ugh. Well, I do live on an Island on the Gulf Coast so if I stay long enough it will probably all blow away during a hurricane anyway.

Ps I like the style of first pic posted the best. The color is same as I had before😳.

I would prefer a dark brown rather than black for a coastal home, perhaps something like this...

We have a leather Pottery Barn sofa in Gray Wolf Burnished which is a shade of medium-dark brown and we love it. Very similar the the inspo just posted by lisdev.

I would stay away from black leather....too stark.

Besides these leather taupe/beige reclining sofas, there are likely ones available through Costco.

Would help to see a photo of your floor color. I agree with those above black is probably not the right color though. A Mushroom color or a ivory might work depending on what that flooring looks like.

Have you considered navy? We had a couple of navy Eckornes sofas in our old house that worked with almost everything.

I love a caramel colored leather it is so versatile IMO so much nicer thsn black I have white leather and i am not anywhere near the coast . I sold really high end Italian furniture for a long time and rarely ddi we sell black. We had so many aewsome colors that most people when they saw that choice forgot black. I have gray floors and pa

Thanks for all the ideas. My first thought was a lighter leather but then when researching leather of course light is going to show wear and tear more. So then I switched back to darker. I did think of Navy. Attaching some pics I just took. It is a dark gray day so not as bright in the room as normal. And I just sold my coffee table and 2 end tables the other day. The tables there I just primed and waiting on paint to arrive.

Is painting the walls a different colour something you're also considering? I don't think that gray would be the best colour to complement a brown sofa, navy would be better.

Can you most more pictures of the room showing all 4sides so that we get a better idea of your space and let us know what you plan on keeping.

With seeing the photos of your space with the floors if you want to go dark I would do a dark brown without much red in it or a mushroom color a bit darker than your current sofas for medium tone and a light ivory or similar to your current collor for a lighter look. I have two ivory leather recliners in my living room and I have never once thought about any wear and tear showing on them. I see the dirt easier but that just takes a bit of leather cleaner and it is gone. Good quality leather should be fine in a lighter color just like a darker one will. In my opinion blue would work great also if you didn't want a neutral.

    Navy or saddle brown leather

NO to a black leather sofa!

I agree with Patricia Colwell Consulting that a caramel leather is very versatile. It’s an added bonus that it looks great with your dog.

I think you’d be missing out on enjoying a light and airy room, as I can’t see how wear and tear will be more evident on lighter leather (cracks and wear will be seen on any shade). The quality/type of the leather and its construction are what will make the difference. A good compromise if worried is cognac as it’s so adaptable and also consider a less bulky style.

In your next home if not wanting coastal, just change some accessories.

So my white sofas ar 18 yrs old 3 huge dogs and many many parties and spilled wine over those years The trick is to not get sucked in to super soft leather ours are cowhide very thick and a bit grainy but wear like iron . MY dogs are pretty good but thye sneak a nap on a sofa once in a while .

Black leather in Florida is a terrible choice. Do you think black leather doesn't get dirty? Flawed thinking.

You will not see any cracks in good leather unless you use a chemical on it that destroys the leather. It's not vinyl, it's leather. If you're a senior as I am you're only looking for the sofa to last your lifetime. What is that 10 years, 20 years. Leather is safely cleaned with a proper leather cleaner like saddle soap.

Thanks again for the comments and recommendations! This site is great! I have decided to go with Navy. I have a LOT of blue from living/traveling abroad, because I love blue.
The room is decent size with cathedral ceilings. The other wall is a wall of windows with a Navy recliner.
I’m not going to repaint as I recently painted the entire inside myself, ugh! Used Whitecliff Beige and I love it. The flooring will stay also. Navy really is the best choice for this room. I do love the cognac though. Had it in a lake house and it was great!

These aren't leather but in navy to give an idea of decor. If you can frame and rearrange your family photos in a proper gallery wall they would look so much better, there are just too many on the wall below the staircase.

I think black leather sofas will work, but it all depends on how you furnish the rest of the room.

Replace the sofa in in mind's eye with black leather...maybe a Chesterfield because it is such a gorgeous look and you want the sofa to be the one standout in the room.

Or go for a more sophisticated look but using coastal colors as accents.

Add lots of white and some wicker:

My daughter just bought a house closer to us (next door). We are definitely coastal...Cape Cod. She is thinking about black for her sofa, with white arm chairs/black legs, a sisal style rug on which will go her beautiful red Asian antique coffee table she purchased while stationed in Japan. White on white walls/woodwork and lots of art. The sofa will, most likely, be a Chesterfield.

It's all what you do with it and I think a traditional style for the sofa will make it work.

Thank you lisedv, love the Navy. What is considered a “proper” gallery wall? Wondering because I had one at my other house with my “real” art and not just fun canvases like I have in this bay house.

I found your gallery wall distracting because the very colourful pictures look as though they're on top of each other, no frames, and no space between them. Plus it just doesn't look right to me in that space with the sofa below.

I’m vegan myself and so for most part would not do leather, but I like the look and will do faux options.

This is article I came across recently about using leather with Coastal design.

IMO gallery wall is huge misnomer no gallery hangs art all glommed together on a wall. I help hang art in a gallery . IMO original art hung all together is an insult to the art and I love family photos hung in hallways in all the same frames in a line so each can be veiwed to the best .The same goes for those photo type pieces best viwed sepearately not all put in a small space .

    @Patricia Colwell Consulting

My comment was because of the way the pictures were hung in her 1st photo with the sofa below the staircase with all the pictures hung almost on top of each other. Then she replied saying in her other house she had done a gallery wall with what she called "real" art which I did not see.
