Sanding Indoors Tips Needed

I would like to do some light sanding on this Barnwood beam that is attached to my stair railing. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to sand indoors without making a huge mess? Hooking my sander up to a shop vac will work for some areas, but when I get towards the top, the hose isn’t going to be long enough. Just looking for some extra tips.

If you have a canister vac with a detachable hose, you can kluge the two hoses together. If the diameters aren't the same, use rags or paper to wind around the thinner one. You can also use a sock or discarded jeans leg with the end sewn shut. The tighter the weave, the more effective it will be.
