need ideas for updating laundry room

I have a 9’x6’ laundry room that needs updated. The space for the utility tub and cabinet is 50” wide. I want to make this room nicer and am willing to paint, replace the utility tub and cabinet, curtains, wall cabinets, shelving, etc., but want to keep the existing washer and dryer and avoid putting in a different floor. Hoping to come up with a solution where it looks nice and is functional, but still do want to keep my dog’s food and water dish in there. Please let me know what ideas you have. Thank you!

Nice room! if it were me, I would ditch the metal shelves and better utilize all that cabinetry to re-home what’s on there - I would put a bamboo blind on the window and wallpaper it with something fabulous

That is an awesome idea and your room is really nice. Where did you get that cabinet on the right side?

    Any other ideas out there?

It looks like you don't use much of the shelf, which takes up a lot of space. Are the cabinets full? If not, get rid of the metal shelf. If so, can you add shelving between the applicances and the wall?

What's not functional about the room? Do you have space for folding your laundry and ironing (if you ever iron)? If you don't have specific needs, I'd paint. That said, if you leave the shelf in there, the room is cramped and why spend any more time than it takes to shove in another load or pull one out. My laundry is in my basement and I don't spend much time there.

I agree the shelving needs to go IMO a laundry storage spac eid for things related to laundry and you have lots of cabinets for that I have no idea who you work at the W/D with that shelving . Som efun wall paper and maybe a drop down shelf fo folding on thta wall . Paint the wall the color of the wallpaper background and lose the curtain . BTW I wswitched to landry sheets about a year ago and I love them no drippy soap jug nothing but a nice little storage box in my cabinet above my washer . Get them made in Canada from Amazon at a great price. Do you need the sink I have never had a alaundry sink but I do love a cabinet for cleaning and brooms and mops so for me that is what Iwould do in that space .

IKEA May be a good choice for making this room work.

I think it just needs some "freshening". Change the utility cabinet so that it matches the upper cabinets; change the counter to a lighter color. Paint. Can't see the lighting from your photos, but I am think some additional or brighter lighting will help. Raise the curtain valence higher, the window will look taller and give more light. (or remove completely and replace with bamboo blinds or something. ) You might consider changing the grout on the floor to a lighter color as well. If you need the storage for the shelves, consider a shallower set and/or a shorter set with an ironing board top. (Piece of mdf, covered with batting, covered with ironing board cloth, stapled on the underside. ) There also appears to be a space at the end of the upper cabinets, perhaps you could put shelves there for your extra storage or hooks for hanging laundry bags.

You might also put castors on the shelves (assuming you need them for storage), that way you can move them to give you easier access to the machines. Then move them back.

I would replace the shelving system with shallow wall mounted shelves, leaving the floor space below open for your pets food and water bowls.

Thanks everyone - there are some good ideas and good points made here. Thanks also for sharing the pictures

Biggest issue is that because your dog needs to get in here, you have to leave the door open all of the time, therefore you want to have this be a pretty and functional space. I'd move the dog water and food elsewhere, if you can, paint and put a different curtain up, and keep the door closed.

If you need to have the dog food and water here and keep this open, tell us more about your ACTUAL storage needs. Do you need the wire shelving there?

That is a good point. I am definitely going to ditch the metal shelving unit, paint the walls, get new blinds and a rug and get a new sink/base. The wall by the dog food is the remaining decision. We don’t really need the extra storage but would like to put something there, maybe floating shelves, a similar cabinet to what la_la girls suggested with the dog food underneath (but we can’t find that anywhere) and/or a narrow, folding down folding table.

We don’t really need the extra storage but would like to put something there,

    Why?

Putting something on the blank wall hinders movement, blocks the window, chops up the space. Leave well enough alone especially because you do not need the storage space.

Lala’s pic has extra space to the right of the window that you do not have.

Ok thanks again for all the advice. I decided to ditch the metal shelving and instead put some coat hooks on the right side since there really isn’t any space there or additional storage needs. In the spring/summer, I will move the coats to the master bedroom closet. I am going to buy a new 48inch cabinet and sink, which will provide an addition 8” of counter space and put a 10” wood shelf above the washer and dryer. In the cabinet under the sink I’m going to have a slide out tray to put my dog food container on.

Ok, at this point I’m going to paint the walls, the upper cabinets (to match whatever color the new sink base cabinet will be), the shelf, the boards holding the new coat hooks, etc. I do not want to get new flooring. Any suggestions regarding what color the cabinets should be and what color to paint the walls to match the new and painted cabinets and existing floor? Outside of this room is my kitchen, which has light gray porcelain tile, white cabinets and gray granite. I’m going to add a new valence and/or blinds and probably put a rug in there too.

    Thanks

Sounds like your plans are coming along. here is what I would add:

Get knobs for your upper cabinets. It will make them easier to use and also preserve the finish.

Skip the valence and get a cordless blind.

Thanks I will get knobs for those cabinets? Any suggestions for paint colors and cabinet colors?

I would go with white cabinets. White will open up and brighten the space considerably. White will go with any other colors you decide to go with such as wall color, curtain/valance/shade color, and any accessories you decide to display.

Paint the walls blue and leave the cabinets in their wood finish. The coat hooks look like they are doing their job nicely.

If the floor tile has not been professionally cleaned recently, it may look much brighter after cleaning and sealing. Sealing makes it easier to keep clean, too.
