Bulkhead in kitchen

last year

We have a bulkhead that is 9" high, 14" deep in our 9 ft ceiling kitchen. The bulkhead will stay and will be covered with 5 3/4" crown moulding and a 6" riser (total height: 11 3/4"). The upper cabinet will be 40" high and the standard 13 1/2" deep (that includes 1" door). Cabinet maker said normally there is an overhang of 1" that sticks out on top of the upper cabinet, but in our case, it will be 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" because of our 14" deep bulkhead. They are suggesting to have the cabinet deeper if we want to have an overhang of 1". Would an overhang of 1 1/2 to 1 3/4" look nice if we don't make the cabinet deeper? Should the bulkhead flushed to the cabinet door? If so, how much should the depth of the upper cabinets be?

Post your elevations. If the bulkhead is only 9” tall you will have 6” of space between the bulkhead and the uppers which is I assume where the riser is going. Is the crown going on the riser or where the bulkhead meets the ceiling? How big is the crown? Most cabinet builders aren’t designers…

Appreciate your help. See picture of the elevation (a U-shaped kitchen) and the bulkhead (soffit) that is 9" high and 14" deep. The entire bulkhead will be covered with the crown (5 3/4") which will be where the bulkhead meets the ceiling and a panel (riser?). Total height will be 11 3/4". Below that, sits the cabinets. There will be 2 upper angled cabinets, and all cabinets will be stained maple wood with raised panel doors.

Your cabinet maker has to create a section showing the riser and crown. I still don’t understand where the crown is going based on your description.

Is there a reason for the 40" cabinet? That's an odd size.

Seems like this is what you are describing. I don't get the 6" riser as I would expect a panel like i show in dark gray that would cover the soffit and extend down to the cabinet.

I might do something like this adding some trim at the top of the cabinet.

The cabinet maker suggested the 40" upper cabinet for our 9" foot ceiling kitchen.

Top to the right hand side on picture is a drawing showing detail of the crown and panel that will cover the bulkhead. The cabinet maker said there will be an overhang of 1 1/2 to 1 3/4".

Should the panel in dark gray in the picture posted by PPF be flushed to the cabinet door?

drop the ceiling in the whole room rather than have a bulkhead?

Will everything above the cabinets be painted?

Make sure you understand how the crown will look at these 2 spots.

Everything above the upper cabinets will be stained the same colour (light brown) as the cabinets.

They told me the left side that @PPF.circled in red, will have the crown and panel wrapped around the bulkhead which will be extended 28" to the wall (see picture of the wall).

To the right that is circled in red @PPF., the bulkhead is also 14'' deep and there will be an extension that will have the same depth as the fridge.

"Ditch the corner cupboards..." I was thinking the same thing. On your window wall the straight cabinet to the wall will look better (IMO) and items in it will be easier to access.

I'm happy to see that your lower cabinets are mostly drawers.

Thank you all for your feedback. Regarding the 2 angled upper cabinets, the cabinet maker will change them to 90°, there will be 2 separate doors (as shown in the picture) and only 1 handle on the right door. Would that look good having 2 separate doors instead of the bi-fold door? The base corner cabinets will have bi-fold doors.

Bi fold doors always get out of alignment eventually. I’ve never installed one.
