Does this rug work better?

last modified: 4 months ago

Updating my post with my main questions:

1. Does the new rug work with the art (colors) And overall style?

2. Would it work to use the same rug in dining room? Or find one that compliments it.

3. Should I keep looking for a rug, this isn’t the one?

4. What coffee table will work in the space with this rug, art and other furniture in both rooms? i like a ton of styles!

*Desk next to couch is temporary. it goes in another room, I know it looks crowded.

I posted a while back that I was looking for a new coffee table, but a designer on here said i needed to change out the rug or the art. I decided to look for another rug. It was hard to find one that didn’t over power the art or clash. Was looking for something lighter with more muted colors that complimented the art. The previous rug in person went well (IMO) but there was no green in it. Trying to find a muted rug with shades of green, blue and rust that compliment the art. I like this rug but wondering if the contrast between the dark couch and light rug is too drastic, and now the coffee table stands out too much with this rug, they both feel too formal together. I really want to change out the coffee table. I’ve had it 25 years and it is too fancy for me. i think the previous rug it seemed to camouflage the coffee table a bit. Now I’m back to deciding if this new rug works better and to find a coffee table style I like. Dining and living flow together and are pretty much open to each other. The dining is more casual and I’m thinking the coffee table doesn’t work with all the other furniture. I feel like to keep it, i I need to add touches of more formal decor or mirrors, which i really don’t want to do.

*Pictures with light rug is the new rug, darker blue rug is the previous rug. Also added dining room to show the style which i have no idea what style I have going on. This rug also goes great in the dining room. Normally wouldn’t do 2 of the same rug in both rooms, but am wondering about that.

I will be flanking the art with something when i find the right thing.

I think the rug looked fine in your LR. I like the original rug that you had - ie the one that now looks like it’s in the DR. But these other rug choices are nice, too. I particularly like the third one. If you want more color, the 2nd one.

I like your coffee table. It’s very elegant. And I also like that it has angled corners, so no sharp edges; very helpful with glass, in general. And definitely if you have any children in the home - which in that case, I don’t prefer glass at all. But the point is - I think that the style of the current coffee table may be throwing off the overall look a bit.

In the visual further below, I used an Industrial style on the table - simpler lines -

So I don’t think it is necessarily the rug that is taking your room in a formal direction, but perhaps more so the coffee table. If you bring in one of these other rugs- that might mitigate it... but TBH, I am not sure. I think it also depends on what you would like to do and what is easier, more cost efficient, etc.

Thank you @dsimber I think HIWE was suggesting two of the ones I found locally and posted, that she felt looked better than the original i posted and second one I posted.

    These 2.

i almost originally got these but passed the up since they lack a bit of color i wanted to try a soft look with muted colors. I am picking the 2nd one up today to try it out. The other one is not in stock so i have to wait to pick it up. Originally decided against it due to long fringe on the ends, not great for robot vacuum. I think HIWE confirmed she thinks these 2 work in my home and together.

W I dont like fringe either…so I just use carpet tape and flip under and secure to the backside….looking forward to seeing it in your space🤞🤷🏼‍♀️

@freedomplace1 thank you for the input! I do still like the very first rug. it feels so relaxing and calm. I agree my coffee table is the issue for my space, (perhaps the art choice is too). The coffee table is one of the last pieces of furniture i have not replaced in the last 10 years, since I’ve gone more relaxed in style. It needs to go. I was drawn to the colors in the art and felt I needed a bold pop in the living room which is right next to the dining room with a bold pop of blue sideboard. Perhaps it was the wrong choice or too modern. Trying to tie it all together. New coffee table is on the list! By the way I like the image you posted.

@Home Interiors with Ease great idea on the carpet tape! I like a short tiny fringe, which the first rug has. This other one has that long fringe that is knotted. i figure i could cut it off but don’t want to ruin it. They are both very nice quality rugs. But for the money the first one is very plush and high end looking in person. I guess i could use it in my bedroom, colors go well.

    Hi, W

You’re welcome! And thank you for the compliment on image I posted.

I love that first rug - the one you had in there. It’s beautiful, subtle, and definitely rich looking. And I agree it has a calm vibe. It doesn’t scream traditional (and when i say ”scream traditional” don’t get me wrong, I love Traditional style! I’m probably one of the few on this board who does love Traditional style. I like and understand any number of styles, though. And I am also a fan of the Eclectic.) But what I am saying is - the rug you have now can work in any number of design settings. Really just depends on what you put with it.

I think your art is fine. I am not really a believer in getting art to ”match” a space. Go with what you love. I mean, it’s fine to design a space around a piece of art - or to get art that goes with colors and vibe of a space. But it is not mandatory. Only mandatory if decorating a hotel room - and even then, depends on which hotel. :)

Your current coffee table is fabulous. That is a solid piece! I would hate to part with it, too!

@freedomplace1 thanks that’s very helpful. I see a lot of things on line in decor that are not perfect matches but somehow work. So I understand what you’re saying. I like a mix of styles probably because I like them all. The coffee table is really solid but I’m now feeling with everything I’ve replaced in the last 10 years it might look out of place? Maybe with new rugs and table I’ll tie it all together. Appreciate your advice!

    My pleasure, W.

You have great style - and a great eye! You are mixing things up, but you have a real talent for this, which is great!

And yes, I think it’s the coffee table. It is out of step with some of the other elements - and it is such a statement piece that it can’t help but take center stage! :)

You notice how the style of the coffee table is at odds with your ceiling light - which is more modern/Industrial.

Just included the above image with Industrial style table again, since I referenced your light fixture.

So i picked up the other rug I liked initially. Far from the soft more muted tones but it works. I’m just not sure if i want to let the soft muted feel go. My husband loves the first rug. He likes the subtle look and it’s really soft. I like them both. I probably needed the 8x10 but tried the 9x6. The rug I’m replacing was 9x6 it just didn’t go under couch as far. I’m so indecisive! I like too many things. If this freshens the look of the room up I might go with it.

This new one looks really nice. Did you mention before that the first one could go in the DR? It seems you really love the first one and now you mention OH loves it too so I would really think about it. If it works in the DR, best of both worlds.

@kcooz07 I did mention I liked it in the dining room. Side-by-side I like the colors together. The rooms are divided by half a wall so they won’t be too close to each other. I’m wondering if the styles work together though? It might soften up the dining room. I might use a similar style to this last rug though. My only concern with this last rug is it’s that looped wool. Having it snagged by my dog is my concern. Not that I want him on it but you know how they ininevitably find their way on rugs.

Here’s a side by side of both rugs. I still love the look and feel of the first rug. When i was out looking the first day, I was focusing on light background and muted colors that weren’t too loud. I passed rug #2 up because lack of colors. I like design patterns like this but, was focused on getting serval of the colors from the art (though different shades) in a rug. When I had previously used the uploader websites to view rugs in my space , I noticed more neutral rugs looked better. Sometimes too plain or stark, made my couch and coffee table stand out too much hence ,why I was thinking color would fix that. I just didn’t want a lot of deep bold saturated color on the floor. Dark floors, dark couch therefore, wanted to liven and brighten it up. After bringing this nuetral pattern home, it’s interesting how it fixes things that bother me about the room. It actually feels like it works to be cohesive with even my coffee table I’m wanting to replace., as well as a chest my TV is on which, I was going to either paint or replace. This will buy me time to find and decide on a coffee as well as what if anything I do with the chest. I’m sharing all this, if it helps anyone trying to decide on rugs. Funny how the right colors and pattern can fix a lot and feel right. I feel like I could leave the coffee table and not be so bothered by it. Now should I worry about the snagging of the looped wool with a dog? I only wish this rug was not looped wool for that reason. Really appreciate everyone that chimed in! It helped he me keep searching and ultimately went back to this original find I passed up. 99% think it’s the one and I’m done looking.

Given your concerns about the loops, I think it would be worth looking at this one in your room when it comes in. The colors look very similar, and you may find it equally pleasing.

I really love the looped rug..I know the dog..I have had the same situation had a 100lb Bernese Mountain dog and a Bernadoodle at 80lbs for a stretch of 22 years..it really should be pretty durable…..The warmth it brings to the room without having to add blue or green is wonderful no matching to art..the art stands alone put blends beautifully and the room still has a bright light look…I think it is a winner! honestly I think your coffee table works..until you see something you cant live without.

@dsimber that one too has loops you just can’t tell from the picture. It’s a chunkier loop and it has the long tied knot tassels. That one would be too much light i think up against my couch. When I looked at mostly solids (on line, via the rug up loaders) with very little contrast, it made the coffee table and couch too prominent. I think I will use that in the dining room though. They don’t have the size i want or I would have brought it home yesterday so I ordered it. Those were my first 2 choices when I went looking and passed them both up because I was thinking “color.”

This is probably a very unpopular opinion I like this one in the dining room too. I like it with the new rug as well. I think I’ll have to try both. The two I passed up (chuncky loop with knotted fringe and one currently in dining room) were my first choice so most likely will end up with it in the dining room. I guess it’s true to go with your first hunch.

@Home Interiors with Ease and anyone else interested in chiming in, do you think it ever makes sense not to do rugs? I took back the other rug and ordered a larger one for the living room and the dining room rug. They are being shipped since the store didn’t have my size. Crazy thing is I’m loving no rugs. It feels more spacious. I’ve never had a rug in the dining room but always thought i should add one. I know I’m wishy washy crazy! Does it look like it needs rugs? It’s dark now so not the best light.

@kcooz07 and @Home Interiors with Ease thanks. Yeah I’ve never really liked them under dining tables. We seldom eat in the dining room anymore unless we have quests and on holiday’s. I thought about styling it like a library table, but wanted to brighten it up with a rug and now I’m thinking about no rug as it already is. I guess I’ll wait until they come in and see what looks and feels best. If leave the rug out of the dining room which rug do you think will look best in the living room between these 2?

@Home Interiors with Ease and anyone chiming in. As I’m waiting on the rugs to ship, now I’m second guessing my choices. I think because i like the no rug look. The coffee table stands out less on the dark wood floor. I really wanted to brighten up the space with a lighter rug, dang I’m so undecided. What do you think about a dark rug? Ultimately I’ll decide once I get the rugs. But i took this little rug I have in a hall bath to see if something like this works better and still works with the art? Then I messed around with rug uploaders to find a possible version.

    Yes, no, maybe?

    Verses

Maybe it’s because the darkwood make the table blend better and feels less formal and a little masculine?

I like the way it looks without a rug. Of the rugs you had on hand to try, I liked the first on with the orang'ish accent color. Didn't care for the one with the blue accent. I like this last one you have mocked up.

I still like the first batch better. The very first one and the mustard one. The coffee table is lovely, but to me it is just too tall for the furniture and dominates. Maybe it is just the pictures and not that way IRL?

The W house- you are correct, I have been busy. I lost one of my sisters mid December and I am the Administrator of her Estate. Very unexpected and it has been very stressful and a nearly full time job sorting everything out. I am just now coming up for air so to speak. Am getting back involved again. I prefer light colors in rugs having had both styles because they are so lovely no matter what styling I chose!

Dining room rugs are great IF you are not concerned about constant food-gravy-syrup being spilled. Or you have a slightly darker rug. My experience has been that 100% wool will usually clean with just water, soap-and-water or Resolve.

If you have little ones, you may want to hold off until their eating habits are more reliable. But I think a dining area rug makes everything look grounded.

This is our current dining room rug.
