The pic is helpful. Not sure there are any other walls for it. The foyer adjoining wall is the front door. The living room adjoining wall is windows and fireplace. Wall across from it has art and sofa. Why no accent wall? It looks so bare

I like your house. I think it’s very monochromatic and needs color. Would you be open to new rugs and some throw pillows? And a different rug at the entryway?

the 2nd one maybe Your style is a bit hard to nail down I see very traditional stuff and then a very modern TV area . Is all the stuff staying ? IMO either allor nothing the 1 st one is an odd proportion

Appreciate your comments. The furniture is from my former home. When I replace it I’d like to get a more modern couch and chairs. It’ll have to do for now. The console is new and I feel like nothing goes together.. What color rug and throw pillows would work? I’m thinking a sand or carmel colored couch and 2 off white chairs , but not sure. I’d replace the ottoman also.

Beverly, the wall across from the foyer table is a whole wall closet. Do you mean to just bring the top horizontal board around to the front door? Would the entire long wall would then look ok with board and battens, if it continues around to the front door?

The problem isn't trim.

The problem is disjointed sterile/cold.

It isn't that gray is bad.......it is just that texture and warmth has a feeling. Find yours, and don't waste money on BOARD AND BATTEN accent ....anything.

As others are suggesting it might be better to rethink your furnishings before adding trim to the walls.

Your space looks like the morning fog rolled into your house! The lack of any contrast is probably what makes you think it is bare. You need more color and texture to add some interest. Try to look for more unique and/or original things that reflect your personality and interests.

Thank you for all your input. I’ll nix the wall idea. I’m open to new couch and chairs and ottoman. They are from my old house. Please help me with a color palette…. I get so mixed up. Can’t get an accurate pic of wall color but it’s agreeable gray.

Now find an accent that appeals to you.....and reduce the gray to the background.....

Your room is pretty and the layout works. But. I think I'd need a Seasonal Affect Disorder lamp in here. I think grey is a pretty color but this is down right gloomy. And, I don't understand how the media console related to any of it.

Do you want to keep the console? If so, I'd get all new seating and coffee table. It doesn't match anything else.

I'd get a new rug for the space. It could help the grey walls. I'd go for wood tones or metal tones on your black frames and get a metal toned floor lamp.

Start with a new couch in a color you love. Jan showed you maroon. Here are various blue couches.

Buy either the rug or the couch first and build from there.

I LOVE greens. Can’t go wrong with an olive green couch IMO. I also love the brown one that Jan posted.

Thank you both very much. Your guidance is helping me understand how to go about this. I can’t change the media cabinet. It’s new. My husband fell in love with it. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick the right furnishings so everything looks more cohesive.

I was wondering if the new cabinet was a husband piece. I'd think about getting a shape of sofa that is more complimentary to the lines and modern feel of the cabinet.

OF COURSE it's a husband thing- it has a grain!!! Nobody argues you don't need a matchy matchy gray room, but every thing you put in a room, does become a thing in the room. "Art" is not wall decor, and most people HAVE wall decor. Put some art on the tv. with an app on your phone, Find a rug or a couch, either can be first, The chairs at the fire...think sleeker, and same with the couch. When he has a hissy fit? You say don't blame me! You loved the cabinet..........( his chair is a whole lot of lumpy too: )

Here are some rugs to consider. Thousands are on various websites and picking something that works with more than one color lets you decide the couch later. OR you buy the couch first and look for rugs. These first ones are more neutral.

In all fairness to my husband I did agree to purchase the cabinet. I do wish I would’ve trusted my gut, but it’s here and staying.

In all fairness? You have to sit and ask how far you want to go. Any room is the sum of ALL its parts. When you drool over a room you see on Instagram or elsewhere? You are seeing the whole and no selection was made in the isolation of I like this cabinet, this color for a couch.....this for a chair.

Example.....and (get some " art on the smart tv so its doors don't scream at you). Put no pattern on the floor, just texture....like the jute here

It's the "SIGH" thing you want in your room, no matter whatever makes YOU sigh,. The way to get it is to decide your intent for the room, the feeling.........and it is never just scenario where you randomly buy.....stuff , or the sigh will be one of regrets: )
