what is this material that was under our shower??

We have decided to install a Schluter shower pan and tile over it to replace the cracked shower insert that was there when we moved in a few months ago. When we pulled out the shower, insert this is what we found. At first, I thought it was tile but looking closer it seems like some form of cement board? Can anyone help and tell me what I am working with? Can we install the shower pan over this or does this need to be torn out?? This is in a second story bathroom.

You can NOT do what you are talking about. You have to completely finish the demo, back to the bare substrate. Then you can start over.

There is absolutely no way to tie waterproofing to a foam pan sitting on top of a failed and leaking pan. That is a hack of the first order. Might as well tape down garbage bags as do that. It will be just about as effective.
