Dining Room Fireplace Question

Hi! first time poster here needing some second opinions. i am wondering if these shelves around my fireplace were added later and if I removed them if i would find basic drywall. when i knock on the back of them it rings hallow. the brick seems to wrap, but i see grout about 6 inches back between the cabinet wall and fireplace.

id like to do something more minimal like floating shelves- just not sure what ill find if i remove them. ive considered drilling a hole through the back to see whats back there but unsure how easy the that would be to patch .

What if you paint the fireplace wall and brick, an accent color

Simplify...horizontal shelving. No measurements given, but possibly you could fit in two small tables.

although everything may have been installed at the same time, the shelves look like they went in first and the bricks added then the crown moulding.

I would remove the whole thing and start over.

the biggest mess would be removing the hearth... Does the floor butt up to the brick?

You'd have to finish the raw exposed floor.

Looking at your pictures it looks like the cabinet was built to fit the space after the bricks were installed. I would remove everything. The sides of the fireplace are probably brick.
