You can do a search on corner fireplaces in the Houzz pictures to see what others have done. Here's one with minimal tile and another with maximum tile. We need to see the whole room for more context in order to offer better advice.

Can you take another picture that shows the wall floor to ceiling, we cannot see the floor. A straigh front view would also be good.

Although I don't see anything in the room except for this small corner, warm white walls would also make the room look more contemporary.

You can install large porcelain tile or polished plaster to reface the fireplace.

while you consider tile, I would paint the whole wall a dark color, if you like a green direction, but dark, SW Oak Leaf Brown is a nice rich color that has a green undertone.

the existing green isn't dramatic enough for this interesting space. The light floor and sectional could be a great feature if you go the complete opposite direction.

I agree with susan4917. I'd rip it and the hearth out. I can see why you never use it with the way it's placed precisely adjacent to the wall which seems dangerous. That's to code in your area? Or reconstruct it to be centered in the space with no hearth since the hearth makes it lean more traditional.

Yes, lisedv - perpaps wrapping the marle around the the wall to the right too but without the hearth. I would then get rid of the carpet and perhaps even change the color of the cabinet. What do you think?

Susan49417 & Tylnn1960, I did think about getting rid of the fireplace a while back but a realtor told me that it would decrease the value of the home. I defintely do not want that.

I question the thought that removing the fireplace would lower the value of your home.

It is awkwardly placed, poorly designed and out of keeping with the style of your home..

The fireplace is so ill placed that the only way I see of dealing with it is having it removed and the wall repaired.

I also question the comment by the realtor. The fireplace is a big turn off for all the reasons expressed above. A well designed and coordinated space will be far more enticing to a buyer than that fireplace.

Agree the fireplace is awkward. Oh, and one more important thing: YOU ARE THE OWNER.

You don’t use it, it’s difficult to design around and having a fabulous wall with your tv placed appropriately would improve your room immensely. Your realtor does not have the final say on your home.

Throw a blanket over it and start designing the entire wall without it. Yes, it will look more functional and PRETTIER. Then start pricing the removal of it.

I would simply paint the wall and hang some decor. If we could see more of the room (all sides) as well as adjoining space we might have more specific suggestions.

If you plan on also replacing the flooring, it's a good opportunity to coordinate all your elements. I would look for samples, put everything together, and even consider painting the walls. Don't buy anything until you make a plan that suits your budget.

No to an accent wall-not with paint, wallpaper or textured tile. It's a partial wall at that so a random tiled wall that doesn't relate to anything else in the space doesn't make design sense.

Your focal point in the room is your wall of windows with the lovely exterior view.

If you want a modern look for your TV, remove the ill-placed fireplace/hearth and visually heavy traditional bookcase and sheetrock over that whole area to make a flat wall. Wall mount a TV at proper viewing height (center of TV is at eye level when seated) over a low wall-mounted credenza in a modern style. Remove the wall to wall carpet since you're replacing the floors-use one cohesive flooring everywhere in the space and throughout the first level like a classic white oak floor in a natural finish or a mid-tone/medium brown wood floor.
