How to pull Living Room Together

Just moved in.. and have several great pieces but need some advice or suggestions on how to pull it all together (rug, curtains, any additional furniture pieces). It looks somewhat sterile right now.

I have very high, vaulted ceilings and they painted the beams a shade of grey. Also have a grey brick fireplace on one side (that will be a project for another day)

Was trying to find a cream colored rug that may pick up the same shade of green in the sofa.. or perhaps with some terra cotta color.. but everything I found was too busy. Should I stick with a simple cream rug, or perhaps cream with some black?

There is a wall of window behind the sofa; and right now just have the curtains they left behind.. Not sure if I should stick to a light, gauzy feeling curtain or go for something heavier to add some depth.

Please ignore the stuff in the built ins... I just placed it there but haven't arranged it.

That foloor is busy so your idea of simple is a good one but how about some real texture like a shag in maybe nthe gold type color from the throw .BTW I would remove those builtins they do not go with what you have for furniture right now , I would do linen drapes in a nice natural color Maybe the TV you stand is sort f see might fit where those builtins were or at least that same color of wood on that wall with a nic shelf and one fab piece of art instead of all that stuuf none of which seems to need display . You are in a huge need of lighting maybe agreat arc laight to light the cente of that space , from behing the sofa where the pieces join . Then at least a table for the chair and hopefull another lamp or a drop fixture from the ceiling there .I have this lamp for the center of the space and then a pendant over the chair to go with it would be my choice Some art to replace the mirror in that hall

I'd choose an interesting rug with some color.

The drapery panels are the least of your problems.

Is there a bank of windows behind the TV too?

I know you just moved in,

but wondering what the long term plan is for the Brick?

    keeping the bar sink?

Lyn - thanks. Long term plan is to remove the wet bar / sink; and I would like to cover up that brick... I would like to perhaps plaster, or put up some type of smooth surface and also add a Wood Mantel. There are no bank of windows behind the TV.

mount the TV on the wall, relatively close to the built ins... then face the sofa toward the fireplace wall (your focal point in the room) build your conversation area facing the TV and fireplace. is it possible to remove the shelves and put the TV there without the knick knacks until you do an overhaul?

I really like your furniture and it's a very nice room. I don't mind the MCM brick but plastered like you say is fine.

The built-ins are nice but change the doors and hardware and get matching doors for the wood storage box.

The TV could go in the niche to the left of the Fireplace. Then light the shelves on the right, the room would feel balanced.

As big a rug as possible would really ground this space. I was thinking Persian with that furniture but like you said busy...they have those washed out Persians that are not dark or very busy looking.

I would paint the beams a wood color to tie in with the floor.

Hard one with a rug because that floor is so bossy and doesn't play well with your golden tones, dining table, and green sofa. Your instinct to get a cream rug with a bit of green is a good one. I also think the walls and ceiling need to be cream as well, so there's that. If you do paint the walls cream, dye the curtains to match the cream. Paint the fireplace as well. The white is just too stark.

Go to a big rug website and plug in ivory, gold, green and see what comes up. Then order very small rug to test palette. This one below is from Wayfair and probably too busy.

Open two windows on your computer and put online rug choices in one window and your uphostered second photo in the other window. The rug I posted goes very well with your ensemble but not sure it works with that strong floor pattern.

What kind of flooring is it? I agree that a big rug would help ground the room and like the one above

The warm flooring is fighting with the gray of the beams the white of the built-ins. Painting the beams is my first thought but if you can live with it for a little while, what you need to change will probably become apparent to you..

The first thing I notice is that the warm colors of the furniture and especially the floor really fight the gray beams and grayed out fireplace. I would warm up the color of the beams (and maybe the fireplace--make it more of a focal point instead of blending it into the surroundings) and agree on a rug --will help pull everything together and tone down the very strong floor color. I would pull out the built-in shelves and cabinets--really fighting the cool MCM vibe of the fireplace and ceiling; and replace with floating shelves for a more contemporary look.
