barn door options?

Is there a way to convert these French Doors to a barn door without removing the transom above the door, ideally where the transom is not blocked when the doors are closed?

Anything is possible but why this change is the first thing . Barn doors IMO have a purpose sometimmes but thye need to suit the house and need a place for the hardware and for the door to go when open . From what I see the hardware will not fit to allow the transom to stay the hardware maybe could fit above the transom but thta calls for a custom door too . I need mor einfo please .

The doors/transom combination you have is classic. Changing to a bar door would just look odd.

Doesn't look like there is enough frame above the door between the door and the transom to habg the barn door track and carry the weight. Both the hardware and the door will be heavy and really needs solid material to attach to, like a header not a door/transom jamb. It will fall in fairly short order.

If this is a typical traditional suburban home, then a barn door will never look right.

What don't you like about your french doors?

Yep, what @millworkman said. Say more about why the french doors are not serving your needs and we can try to find a work around for those needs that don't include a barn door.

    Seems unlikely.
Plus I agree, I like the French doors better than a barn door…

Ick. Ick. Ick. Don't mess with classic and beautiful for a silly and ugly fad.

Maybe you could come take my barn doors and I'll take your french doors? We regret our decision to do barn doors for the office in our house. They are useless. They don't block sound and even our dogs have figured out how to open them. There is NO WAY I would change yours.

If you want to make the doors opaque, put blinds on them or window film.

However IF YOU INSIST you could probably DIY a frame with wood & hardware to bridge the gap.

What is the reason for you to want to change this door?

Barn doors do not keep out noise. And don’t work with most houses. Plus everything above around installation issues.

Ugh definitely do not do a barn door.

Oh. please just NO. It also appears the space is overloaded with I have no clue, so if the reason is an attempt at hiding a mess? No. Clean it up and prune to what fits for whatever purpose you are using the space. Don't make a modern farm.........from an obvious center entrance suburban colonial......please.

You can even apply translucent film to the french doors. Let in the light and block the view

You could do a barn door with glass in the top, or even open in the top.

"Because I could"........ruins a lot of perfectly nice homes.

There is a barn door style hardware set that accommodates a bifold as it looks like the width is a double door width so one barn door would be large and clunky a split may not work as it does not look like you have the space etc- this way you can retain a glass panel look (you would need to get new doors) Google
