Kitchen or living room?

last modified: 9 months ago

How do you think I should place the kitchen and living room? Kitchen near the entrance door and living room near the exit to the balcony or the other way around? More info: it's an apartment for a family. My floor has yet to be built, so there's a lot of degrees of freedom in designing the apartment. I am working with interior designer but I'd appreciate your opinion. The dilemma is: should we enter directly to the kitchen from the entrance room, or should we enter a living room? The rest of the apartment is not shown, I think it's irrelevant (corridor+bedrooms)

Sorry we need a lot more I formation, and with a project this size why aren’t you working with a designer? I know that may sound self serving but how many times have you done this (vs how many times has a pro). Regardless for us to even try to help we need all the spaces labeled, dimensions on all obstructions, photos of the space if it exists, and more info about what you are looking for (you are a part time chef, you are in a city and get lots of takeout, need a table that seats right, etc)

By now you should know this is a US site they do not understand metric so if you want help use feet and inches. The floor plan you posted is totally useless since a kichen needs plumbing so where is that Name the spaces like entry so we know where thta is Where are the rest of the spaces ? Is this a single home or an aprtment ? Way too much missing info to even begin to help Do all things pertaining to this space now here in comments DO NOT start another post .

I'm very sorry, but even if it had feet and inches vs, cm sq?

How would anyone begin to answer a question so totally void of context?

Folks....any country? We don't live in your HEAD, only you can do that.

Actually understanding how traffic flows through a space is incredibly helpful.

    Where is the dining room?

initially it was planned to in the small area that's left, near the second sliding door

Actually where the other spaces are in relation to this is important since how the flow is in a home is relevent. How you live is a must to understand how you want guests to enter your home . I have a kitchen everyone always ends up in so it is pretty much open to the entry to my home The DR needs to be as close as possible to the kitchen for actual use . Where is the plumbing is good start for room placement you do not show thta but it must be there somewhere . I ssume not in NA so we need a bit of info as to how much freedom you have with layout since in NA the plumbing is already in place in any apartment or condo.

We actually need to know all the measurements

Please correct the numbers below - use 1/2 foot increments and make sure the numbers add appropriately.

If there is a dotted line please measure the space as though the wall was not angled, measuring horizontally or vertically across the space.

Jennifer, thanks. Looks very nice, tho what about all the empty space in the triangle behind the living room's sofa?

Dang - @Gal S....Do you think you can put a cabinet or something like that there!

    What has your designer suggested?

@Mae Day Organizing and Interior Design she suggested to place the tv on the opposite side (the one the forms the triangle) and have the sofa in front of it with an angle. I didn't like it

The triangle area could work for potted interior landscaping.

Slight variations on @Jennifer Hogan's plan above:

Note the questions about the marks along the lower edge of the floor plan.

@simplynatural Thanks. The marks are windows. Your variation blocks the exit to the balcony and poses the sofa in an angle to the tv...

I assumed the left panel of the larger slider is the one that opens. (Is that a handle I see? If so, then the smaller slider also opens on the left as shown and would need to be reversed.) If not, then you're right.

I personally prefer the more dynamic, less static furniture arrangement that acknowledges the interesting angles of the space, but if you don't, it's your apartment. (Great space, by the way!)

If it were my space I might get one of these driftwood shelving units from Etsy for the space behind the sofa that is angled, then balance that with flatter wall art on end with less room behind the sofa.

The person who makes these does all kinds of shapes and sizes.

This seating arrangement seats 7 to 8 people with one large couch for 5 to 6 people and two small swivel chairs.

I added a coat closet to the left of the front door.

I did not know exactly where the windows are going to be located but I am certain you can customize the kitchen cabinets around the windows. Perhaps you can ask the contractor to size them according to your needs/layout. Also, can you ask them to install the large sliding glass doors so they open on the left instead of the right side? That would be far more practical and easier to get in and out of.

Pantry and storage cabinets on the short wall.

    Wet bar near the balcony.

@Gal S - I had asked that you verify my measurements and the drawing because I am not sure you have enough space for a table by the second sliding glass door.

To know we actually do need accurate measurements, but from what I am seeing you have approximately 8' x 8' and the hallway to the bedrooms going off of that space. That leaves you with a 5'x8' space for a table and chairs if you don't want the chairs blocking the hallway to the bedrooms.

I do like the way Mae Day shows the living room as you enter the house, but she also took the liberty of moving the doorway and so you would need to picture the same setup with the door being centered on the wall, if the measurements I assessed from your drawing were accurate.

Again, without knowing exactly where the doors and windows are and exactly how big each area is it is difficult to provide good answers.

I live in a house with a lovely front entrance. Everyone comes in the back, through the kitchen! LOL

@Jennifer Hogan Thanks, Jennifer. Yes, your measurements are correct.
