How can I update this 90's kitchen which is in excellent condition

I amnot changing appliances or the floor plan. Looking for ideas that I can incorporate that will update the kitchen. Picture attached for reference. I think the maple cabinets are slightly back in style. I considered having them painted but I'm pretty sure white is on its way out. Any ideas for upgrades is appreciated. For reference, the rest of the house is very contemporary and decorated in grey/beige tones. The rest of the floorplan is somewhat open.

If the layout works for you, price out refacing the cabinets. Change the countertop and backsplash.

Not sure of your budget but it’s a large space and anything structural (countertops for example) will be expensive. Looks like a great place to cook.

I would begin by replacing the floor, perhaps with hard wood. New window treatments, new chairs , and new countertops would be next,

The window treatments and backsplash jump out at me. Then chairs/floor. Depends on what your budget is.

White countertops added to these wood cabinets will look very in and contemporary. Go quartz. You will love them. And I love a good looking backsplash.
I’m glad you’re not painting your cabinets.
Is your floor in good shape or do you think it needs a change, as suggested above?

I’d repaint the rest of the house away from the grey. And get new chairs.

The floor is in fine condition though I agree it is dated. I think that might be a bigger job than we were looking for at the moment. New window treatments like roller shades or zebra shades in a neutral light color are on the agenda. Funny that so many comment on the chairs - we explored something new at Restoration Hardware I am attaching here. Also - wondering if we dd the counters I think we have no choice but to also change the backsplash to maybe a 3x9 style subway tile. I think this backsplash will not work with a quartz/white countertop.

No blinds, new backsplash, new chairs. New hardware. The huge long handles are a lot of look.

if your chairs are fairly comfortable I dont think I''d swap. I would however lift the seats and get new covers if possible . By far, a new floor will help things the most. Get quotes before you rule it out. The black counters are okay in a general way. But grayish floors with black counters is not for me for the long term. If you can save and get a new floor then maybe later a different top for the middle table and island could follow. this could all be done in stages to help the budget. the backpslash and shades look coordinated so I'd leave all that for the immediate, because you want coordination if you replace.......later for that. Your space is saying do a big ticket change first.

start a new chapter for your good kitchen with a new floor.

Agree with no blinds, new chairs. Counters and floors are great. But what about using your chairs and window treatments, and maybe a new backsplash to add some splashes of vivid color to wake the place up?

Patricia - would you say the chair I posted is a modern consideration? Also - any suggesstions for an updated floor? I have not been in the market for two decades. I have beautiful hardwood in a taupe stain throughout the remaining 1500 square feet on this level of the house. At the time the kitchen was done in porcelain for practical purposes - water, cleaning, etc.

I'd pull shades all the way up so less of them shows. Buy a large decorative plate and a plant (or fake plant) for counter area to right of sink. Keep counters as clear as possible. https://www.houzz.com/products/18-thre-chickadees-and-pine-cones-glass-plate-prvw-vr~46941535 .

Honestly, I think it looks great. I wouldnt change the floors. They are not bad and you would probably replace them with another beige floor anyway. You could add a runner, remove the shades, and change the chairs out. Maybe a plant or two like in the photo below? I don’t know if maybe pendant lighting might add something or not. If you wanted to go crazy, you could look at painting the island green and adding a green backsplash.

    There's nothing bad here.

Lose the roman shades,or trade for a color that picks up something else.

definitely GET RID of the backsplash. !! Screams 90"s

The stools /chairs are quite harsh and shiny: (

And this? Very nice...and there is a GIGANTIC trend to greens and a warming trend in general.

Nobody can advise floor without seeing what you have in the other rooms.

I am a NO on black chairs! Any! You have enough in the counter tops.

Leave the HARDWARE alone, unless you are painting the cabinets. or trade for D pulls in same size, which will set you back a big kaching.$$$$$$$

The point is......what is your dream kitchen and clarify the dream, before you begin a crowd source of pecking at your own,: )

Agree with Jan, and also a big NO on white counter tops. The black works just fine as is.

Not a fan of the floor, but if you're seriously considering it, I'd change it out for oak.

I have black quartz counters with specks and I love them paired with my white offset subway tile. Agree current backsplash and window dressing need to go. Do you need window treatment for privacy or light control? Cabinets look fine.

Not bad at all! Definitely make the backsplash and roman blinds off-white, maybe the counters too if you are tired of the dark color & need an airier kitchen, but they are honestly fine as is. New dining chairs. The floor tile is troublesome and looks dated & dirty next to the orange toned cabinets, but it's a big job. Ideally a medium brown hardwood OR a light warm gray (concrete colored, not blue-gray) tile could be replacing it.

I might do a lighter countertop and backsplash and then more neutral shades on the windows if they are needed. New chairs at the island table.

countertop and splashback maybe new blinds .

Agree with new backsplash, new blinds, brighter/5000K LED lights, new chairs. Relatively inexpensive and will transform the look.

Drop pendants over the island and table if you want some fun interest.

While the backsplash is off, I'd add undercabinet lighting and any additional outlets desired/required by current code.

I'd keep the countertop, certainly wait to see the effect of the other changes before thinking about any change there.

I would not touch a finger to the cabinetry. Whoever did that kitchen put in all-drawer base cabs in shaker style with clean silver pulls, which is exactly what is being done today, and the wood used is the tone that is coming back into style now.

The floor is fine, neutral, I'll bet no-one who comes into your kitchen gives the floor a second thought.

I wouldn't touch the cabinets nor the countertop and only replace the backsplash in a cream colour to coordinate with your flooring. I would replace the roman shades with a light solid linen. I would replace the dining chairs in a combination of black wood, woven cane back & upholstery.

I think the expense of replacing the floor is completely unnecessary. You have porcelain tile? Very practical and in good shape. Quite possibly it doesn’t register that well in the photograph, compared to in person. You could lay down a runner or two to switch it up. Cabinets are beautiful I wouldn’t touch them. Ditto with the countertops. I think some simple changes like the blinds, possibly the backsplash, would make a big difference and then revisit.

just a plus +1 to what @lisedv suggested - that would look so nice
