What is or will be the color of your cabinets? Can you show a picture?

For black or charcoal granites, there's a lot of choices, along with soapstone. Some are all one color, some with white speckles (Virginia Mist/Jet Mist is gorgeous), some with white and caramel veins (Belvedere quartzite), etc. You need to get out to a good stone yard and see what they have and what will work with your own cabinets.

Honing and leathering always makes them appear lighter. I have honed absolute black and they appear charcoal. The only way to test colors is take a door sample to a stone yard.

Thanks for the information. The cabinets are still being drawn and we haven’t picked out the exact paint color yet. I was thinking I need to choose the granite first and then take paint sample swatches to the stone yard to find the paint color that looks best with the stone I pick out.

Nope. Choose cabinet color first and go from there. Take flooring color into consideration when you choose your cabinet color, and later your granite. It all should harmonize.

I don't think I'd choose a mushroom color. IMO it's a hard color to work with. But, if you like that's all that matters, just make sure to carefully consider flooring in the fixed elements equation.

porkchop, can you explain more what yousay above wrt mushroom color being difficult. Is this because tone (red / yellow / blue) can vary?

It just doesn't play well with a lot of other colors. Especially if it has pink tones in it, which mushrooms and taupes can have. IMO it can also look rather drab, but of course that is subjective. It's the not playing nice with other colors that can be the problem.

Or it CAN be awesome, but I’d absolutely get that settled first, it’s a more visible element being vertical.

What flooring do you have? It is a very important factor for choosing the final counter top and cabinet color to end up having a cohesive look. Do you have photos of the existing kitchen to see the flooring? I think that mushroom cabinet and dark granite work well together but in my opinion, not total black, just a very dark granite with slightly textured beige or brown hue. I agree that you should choose first the cabinet color and then the granite! Cabinet color takes the biggest volume of your space! One other thing you should be careful of when choosing the cabinets is be not end up with grey instead of a mushroom color. Test the samples in your house with natural lighting, because testing those two in another space than your kitchen could be very misleading.

I can’t find it now but about a year ago there was a thread in which people posted pictures of their black granite counters (honed and leathered.) There were some beautiful examples so hopefully someone can find it. Also at some point someone posted a picture of leathered Uba Tuba. Pretty! It might have some warm tones that look good with a mushroom color. Example below.

When you pick the items that have the least amount of selection (appliances) to the items that have the most slection (wall paint colors), you choices are always expanding. Don't be the lady bringing a wallpaper border into the countertop shop looking for a match please.

I picked slabs first and then chose stain or paint color.

Lots more paint/stain colors than there are slabs in your local geographic area, even if you go to all the slab yards in a 50 mile radius.
