Question about area behind kitchen range

Hello.

I have a question about the area behind and under the kitchen electric range. First of all sorry about the disgusting picture of the area but promise we are in process of cleaning it! We were able to move the stove for the first time since we bought this place!

I noticed that there is a one inch open gap between floor baseboards and the wall. What can be done to close this gap? Is it against the building code to fill the gap? I am guessing the material used to fill the gap should not be combustible. This is an exterior wall i.e., there is parking lot behind that wall and we can feel cold drafts and trying to close the gaps as much as possible.

Any suggestions?

You can caulk that and also install a baseboard along there. You cill have to cut the baseboard, since you dont have room under the plug, to put baseboard. You may also want to use some spray foam insulation, there. Might be better than caulk.

thanks @cat_ky could there be a reason as to why the original contractor didnt do it? Could it just be a sloppy work?

I have hardwood floors. I removed the baseboard so the floors could be refinished all the way to the wall. Like yours, not all the boards reached the wall and the gaps were covered by the baseboard. Just add one as suggested above. I have "leaky" condo exterior walls so I seal the gaps between the wall and the baseboard, and the floor and baseboard (DAP Dynaflex 230) to keep out cold air.

It could be sloppy work, but, its also normal when buildings settle etc. I wouldnt worry about it, just clean it up, put some spray foam in it, or some caulk, and a nice piece of baseboard, that is painted to match the rest of your trim.

It’s no sloppy so much as unneeded. If you care put something there, caulk or quarter round will both work fine.
