Architectural ideas for great room, rethinking crown molding

Rethinking using crown molding in this space due to your suggestions. I would really like to add some architectural detail to this great room, especially TV wall as it seems to me not an interesting enough space. Would really like to hear your ideas. Thank you

I agree that crown is not appropriate for this space. Yes, your space is missing some elements but I don't think you will achieve them from architectural details. Instead, consider:

Lighting can play a huge role in defining a space. You don't have a very layered lighting plan.

    - Picture lighting for your art piece by the fireplace. You can purchase picture lights that will disappear into your white walls. See how these lights bring architectural definition to these walls? It is the illumination itself, not a decorative fixture, that does the trick.

    - A more architecturally engaging dining room table chandelier. Your doesn't help distinguish your dining space from the rest of the room. A new once could really define this space.

    - Your island pendents disappear. Consider a horizontal bar pendent that helps to define the kitchen space, like this example.

    Additional ideas:

    - Cornice boxes for all windows and sliders. (Think contemporary ones, not old school.)

    - Tall, sculptural floor plant either in corner where your sculpture is located or behind the turquoise chair with the ottoman.

    - A set of 3 objects on your china cabinet. The current one is nice. Add two more.

This is a nice room and it is nearly to the point of looking fantastic!

No to the crown molding. Drapes all around. The style of the furniture in the area by the fireplace is at odds with everything else. While you can sometimes use traditional pieces with modern it isn't easy to do well. Having the traditional pieces all together but right next to the modern sofa does not work. There are so many good things in your space. You need to edit more. If these are pieces with sentimental value that can be difficult, but if you keep them where they are the space just won't come together. If you must keep them you need to at least reupholster them.

I would warm up the space with more rugs. Get some help in choosing complementary rugs.

The art is dark and similar size to the TV, so it looks like you have 2 TVs on that wall.

Art lighting for that piece would be a good place to start OR replace the art with a couple of smaller art pieces displayed gallery style so the display isn't the same shape/size as the TV.

You need to clarify your look. You've already paired traditional kitchen cabinetry with a waterfall island , better suited to a more modern kitchen.

The gray and black overkill is already dragging down the whole of the spaces. ....

The tv wall needs nothing but some curtain panels on the windows....after you pick a direction for style, color palette etc.

I feel bad to pile on but I agree you need some pro to come in and help you tie things together. What started as a builder bland house (with nice floors!) got an unfortunate stone accent walls and a heavy traditional kitchen with a modern island. Your table is heavy modern, the china cabinet is traditional. The choices spent look selected- it’s absolutely possible to mix traditional and modern but right now it almost feels like a showroom- here is the modern accent wall, here’s the traditional corner.

A larger rug, beautiful curtain panels will go along way. You already have a lot going on. The dark kitchen and stone fireplace wall with the windows...is plenty of architectural detail. Now you just need to finish your living room. Is the fan necessary and if it is I would find a more attractive one. Perhaps a table behind the couch for some light fixtures and an interesting sculpture. What is behind the fireplace? Is that a dining room? You have a island meant for stools/casual eating (I get it the sink ruins that) a super formal "kitchen eating area" so maybe it's an office? Maybe you need to rethink the entire space. We need to see this room from more angles.

The drapery panels could also be ivory in this space, but the windows need window coverings.

The openings through the stone wall was ill conceived IMO.

Here is the previous post from six months ago that explains the new house and new design preferences.

Thank you for all the information, it is very helpful.I did not build the house, it was a new home purchased from a contract that had fallen out so someone else picked out the interior elements, a lot of the items were moved from a previous home and just tyring to make some of it work. I think drapery panels will make a big difference from your examples, and like the idea of changing the art work over the chest with a picture light. I was going to recover cushions on chair and ottoman as well. The room behind the rock wall is just a small den/office, it is not a large house but, nice quality and especially love the floors. Sorry I do not know what IMO stands for? Again, thank you for our suggestions.
