Hi, Sue. I’ve never backed with fleece, but I have with Minky often. I always use a 80/20 batting. I can’t see any reason why you couldn’t use a flannel batting. It would be lighter than regular batting, but it would be just fine, IMHO. Personally, I don’t like quilt without batting of some sort, although I know some quilters do that too for use in warmer climates.

I don’t know if this is helpful but my donation quilts are backed with flannel and I always use hobbs batting in them. I imagine fleece is heavier than flannel , so you can probably use whatever ’batting’ you like, even a layer of flannel, something with enough weight to give the quilt some body, to make it easy to quilt.

We had a similar discussion on this some time ago and be darned if I can remember what the suggestions were. My memory is failing !

I remembered that question from before.

I was asking if I made a string quilt using flannel as a foundation, and flannel as backing, should I also use an inner batting. mixed responses, most thought the already two layers of flannel would make for a very heavy quilt.

That quilt Is still in the planning stage.
