I am planting a memorial garden for my daughter Evelyn Jane who went to heaven June 2023. She was born with a major congenital heart defect but had a beautiful full year of life and memories i will never forget. After two years trying to obtain the DA Evelyn Rose I have finally succeeded! praise God. i was thinking of planting one on each side of an arched trellis for a bench underneith when i visit her gravesite. any tips for growing E as a climber vs shrub? also any companion plant ideas are welcome and general rose advise. i am in N florida zone 9b

i dont know much about this rose in fl but it is a climber here in CA. if i had it on an arch , my fav companion plant has always been walkers low carmint , the blue is so complementary . 💕

Your baby is so adorable and I can't imagine what you've been through. From reading many accounts of near death experiences (nderf is a great site) I've come to believe that we are eternal spirits who spend a short time in this earthly life to experience many things and to learn valuable life lessons. Hence your precious girl is watching over you and living a wonderful life on the other side, and waiting for you to come to her.

What a beautiful way to remember your daughter. She looks like a darling girl in that photo. Praying for your peace and that you find healing as you garden with her in mind. 🥀

I prefer roses with a lot of companion plants -- for more of a cottage look. As Lilyfinch has already said -- catmint looks nice around roses. Gets a bit ratty looking at the end of the season, but you shear and start fresh for the next season when you prune the roses. I also like salvias, penstemon, thyme, snapdragons, verbascum 'southern charm', agrostemma ocean pearl, cupid's dart...baby blue eyes for spring. I agree that a lovely blue looks great with peachy flowers -- as does a romantic white.

I dont have any suggestions for Evelyn, since mine is just a small plant. However to echo what others have shared, your plan for a rose arch to commemorate your beautiful daughter’s life is wonderful. I wish you all the best in your plantings!

What a lovely tribute to her--I'm so sorry for your loss and am glad you will have this precious space to remember her with. For companion planting, I think calamint is lovely, as is lavender. There are some plants that are associated with remembrance, and I think rosemary, thyme, poppies, some of the more pastel colored gladiolus, forget-me-nots, light pink carnations, and white lilies could be lovely in addition to the roses. The pink-apricot would probably go nicely with the Amazing Grey shirley poppy.
