i would not do too much to the cabinets....the clashing is what exactly ? some granite has been installed over older vintage cabinets. the place has a cozy well kept feel. you could gel stain the oak edge on the cabinets to take it a little darker but I probably would not. Usually those cabinets would be replaced after the original era has passed...and by now, way beyond that .... they could be sought after on market place and so on. Can you bear to live w the existing condition ? Spend money on a stainless hood over the stove...maybe some base cabinet rollouts from REV A SHELF so you have better function since these are not base drawers. Do you have a pantry or drawers in the island to have the space be useable for the future. I prefer the cabinets as they are.....the main issue is the general age and if you feel the space is going to meet your needs for a time going forward......some folks would not keep those .but not because of the color /finish. . the general condition is worth the keeping intact if replacing them is not in the cards. I like the space /the ambience is really cohesive and i wouldnt go gray. Good Luck.

I see a small portion of the island oak. How about more. One option is new doors but what do the island fronts look like?

You would need new fronts and would have to paint the sides too. Get a quote on the cost.

@herbflavor, thank you. I like the idea to replace the range hood with stainless steel. Space isn't a concern, I have a walk in pantry just outside the kitchen area and some cabinets are empty. It is a second home, so not much stuff there. The cabinets are in pristine condition, with the lower cabinets having pullouts as well. The clashing is in the off white of the cabinets to the white and gray of the granite. The granite is new and quite nice though.

@dan1888, I posted another picture, the oak cabinets on the left match the doors and wood on the island, looks like shaker possibly? The two fridge thing is odd, but my family decided they like it to store drinks, so it will stay as well.

@lisedv, new stainless steel range hood, for sure will purchase that. I replaced the stools with all wood stools. Regarding the paint, do you suggest I keep the wood that is on the doors and drawers or paint those as well?

the granite is insignificant in the overall scheme. I hardly noticed the problem you cite . I wouldnt take the tilt of the granite shade as reason to embark on painting those. You lose a lot of authenticity of the look by painting those gray. The space is nice overall...the lighter cabinet is fantastic with all the wood in the space. Gray would darken and make the place dreary and ruin the cabinet as far as I would be concerned.

I showed it with wood but I had not seen the other style of cabinets on the left in your 2nd picture. Taking this in consideration I think it would be better to paint the wood trim so that the difference in style won't be so obvious.

Your kitchen is spacious and surprisingly light considering the amount of wood. You have even managed to make two fridges look normal together. Don't start picking apart a good thing.

I totally understand why the cabinet door and counter top combo might drive you nuts. But, your pristine condition cabinets are going to look good for so much longer than a paint job that will start to chip and wear, look used, and make your space darker.

@Kendrah, thank you. We have been in the house 6 months, just weekends. We truly are on the fence as to whether we should leave it as is, paint, or replace. The set up has been very functional. It may be best to leave it as it is.

If you were to take some planning time after thoughts about everything i think you could get new doors and let an interested party take the originals that you have. Scherrs and a few other places can provide Doors. they work w people and drill for your hinges / maybe hinge upgrade etc… i love the cabs and the overall look but anyway….

Another door supplier is Barker. And Conestoga. The existing oak doors and face frame are flat cut oak with the dreaded darkening open grain. You can't really paint them because of the open grain without added work filling the grain. And this is why European Oak with closed grain is currently popular. Ikea Vendamn is an example.

It sounds like a Vacation home, id leave them alone as they are low maintenance, painting is going to make them more fragile.

I would replace the granite counters before I’d mess with the cabinets.

A solid surface counter (white Corian?) or a butcher block counter would be affordable and look nice. Lot cheaper than replacing cabinets. Maybe not much more than correctly repainting cabinets.

The cabinets are vintage-cool, nice color, in great condition, fit the house style.

To paint cabinets well, you have to remove all the doors and drawers, rough up the laminate surface, spray primer, spray color coat x 2, and the paint will be less durable and wear more than the laminate. Lot of work for an inferior result.

If you replace the cabinet doors, you may struggle with a mismatch between the warm, aged tones of the current wood and the colder tones currently in style for wood cabinets.
