Personally the particle board you have on the ceiling can be made to look expensive, but cheap to install. Cover the seams with 1" X 0.25" boards and then varnish the whole thing. If there are many black spots like the one in the right side of the picture you may want to treat them before varnishing. We were in a home a couple of yeas ago that did exactly that to the walls. It sort of gives a unique knotty pine effect, and is actually appealing.

We actually wanted to do that but many of the boards have black factory lines (not sure why). Is there anyway to fix that?

It’s a garage (barn) building behind our house so it’s not climate controlled 24/7 only as needed.

Maybe do what KR Nuttle suggested and then use a solid color stain on it that would even it out and cover the black lines.

Just a thought, those lines likely are inked onto the surface as a construction guide. Try sanding on one.

For the wood batten suggested, the black lines would also be covered in addition to the seams.

Peel and stick wallpaper is a thought. Many many designs, even murals. You may have to prime or paint the wood first for adhesion since wood is porous. Vinyl wallpaper would be sturdy. Also removable. YouTube DIY.

It's a garage. What else do you do in there except store cars and such? I wouldn't spend any money or time on it. Focus on an area that you regularly use and would benefit from an upgrade.

We are upgrading it to use as a family area for larger groups (lots of kids) they need a space to play or to set up tables
To eat and play. If we can make the ceiling look better we would love to.

It would have been helpful if you had included that information in your original post. In that case, do drywall.

We have a double garage in our home but this building is behind us with apartment above.

sounds like it will be a fun space - I wonder if you could find something on this site - the white feels a little busy but the black tiles might recede more?

But it IS relevant to the problem--if it's just a garage, who cares what the ceiling looks like? My garage is just rafters and a roof. Because yours is going to be a heated (presumably) living space, then the ceiling is more important.

Do you want? As suggested sand and stain, paint, cover it with something (tile, Sheetrock, wallpaper). NONE of these will work for you? What idea are you waiting for

If it is going to be a kids spot, all the wood on the walls and ceiligs needs to come off and have drywall installed. It is a big giant fire hazard otherwise. You also need clear, unobstructed, legal, emergency escape and egress paths.

Her problem began when she slapped two quite different "all the lines on the wall". Which doesn't look good because she needed one set of lines not two......

If you're hung up on what does not exist? You rip the gray planks from the walls repeat the( the wood ) on the ceiling and you USE the dry wall on the WALL above the wainscoting and then paint it a great color.

Now? It's our fault? Alrighty!: ) Might have asked before you did that,.

She might have read "how to post a design dilemma" first. I'm sure she's not coming back, but anyone reading this in the future will have a lesson in how NOT to post a design dilemma.
