My final “Mom” project

last month

My mom died in May 2016. I brought home all her sewing stuff, and since then, off and on, I’ve been working on finishing things she started.

I saved this one til last. I don’t know when she did these two beautiful embroideries. They were on a very large piece of cream fabric. I assembled them into a wall hanging.

Here is a close up of her beautiful work.

The back is kind of wild and wonderful. It’s made of the last few bits of piecing that she had started, supplemented by some fabric from my stash at the bottom.

It’s been a journey finishing these projects. She had everything from completed tops to individual blocks (the back has a couple of blocks that were orphans).

I think I will make notes on all my works in progress, just in case anyone else ever wants to finish them.

I bet that was a journey. On the one hand, it's finally finished. On the other hand, there are no more to do and remind you of her.

RNMom, my maternal grandmother did tatting (which she taught me) and I think she did embroidery, but she wasn’t a quilter. I don’t know where my mom learned to quilt.

Your mom's embroidery is fantastic! How sweet of you to make the blocks into a wall hanging that can be treasured by generations of your family. I always feel so sad when I see unfinished projects languishing in thrift shops.

I'm really intrigued by the stitch your mother has used for the stems, as it's one I have not seen before.

Thanks, Rho! I don’t think I knew the name of it, either. It almost looks like a tiny chain stitch.

Donna, wonderful work, firstly by your mother and then by you.

I envy you the chance to touch, hold and feel your mother in her work. My mother knew she was ’not long for this world’ and cleaned and cleared, leaving none of her work behind. Blessings on you for completing these pieces of her stitching.

Donna, What a wonderful legacy! The embroidery is beautiful and you did a great job completing the quilt.

I still have boxes of my mom's stuff that I haven't tackled yet, but will get to it someday.

Donna, what a beautiful piece! Your mother's embroidery is exquisite and the fabrics you chose to complete it are absolutely perfect! What a special bond to share with your mother. My mother did not quilt, but my sister and I enjoy getting together when ever and where ever we can to share in the art.
