Shopping for kitchen bar stools - any ideas?

last month

These stools came with us when we moved to this house. We designed the kitchen in 2014 and still love it. Cabinets are maple. Counters are Cambria. Walls are painted. The hutch also came with us from the old house and was the start of our kitchen design since it fit the wall perfectly and we were on a tight budget.

I think after 10 years of living with stools we just happened to have, it is time to buy stools that will compliment the kitchen. Any ideas?

You’ve had these for awhile, what do you like about them? Dislike? I like backless stools because they tuck under the counter, most people like the added comfort of backs. I don’t sit at my island long (bowl of cereal, quick sandwich) so I have backless stools that spin/ adjustable height.

Yes, the backless works cuz it is a tight space. We liked them only because we already had them. They are made of maple and are in perfect condition after 15 years or so. But they are not comfortable. And yes, sitting at the bar is usually short time. We do have a dining table.

Counter stools may work well with the maple cabinets and tone of the counters.

This is what I have. I don’t think they are the pinnacle of fine design but I find the spinning too easier to get out of.

We too inherited counter seating and lived with it for a very long time. When I purchased new "bar stools" I was amazed how they transformed my space. Little things can make an impact! Mine are swivel, have a back and are upholstered. We use them a lot, more than our dining table chairs so I wanted my comfortable. Make a list of what you like/want in a stool and google it. You will be flooded with options.

Suggest a wood tone that is complementary and has a traditional feel, but in a contemporary way. Consider backs if you think by being more comfortable you’ll use more.

I happen to like colored stools in a kitchen for that little bit of fun I like backless and swivel too.I might add a pop of orange I see very little color in the home maybe to tie in the orange something orange in the cabinet too .IMO you have enough wood so metal base maybe

I like the color idea. I am generally not afraid of color. This room is painted green and the furniture is green and wood. Orange would be a nice contrast.

I like the metal element suggestion, too. the chandeliers are black metal. And we have a woodstove in the room as well.

The rush seating got me thinking. We are seaside. But, except for shells in bowls, we dont decorate in ’coastal’ specifically. I bet a touch like that would work.

I really like the swivel idea. Moving easily has become more important in recent years. 👵 Thanks for the ideas.

I think all of these fit your style well. I have two similar to the last one here — that style seat (“saddle”) is very comfortable. You could find some with more colorful seats, cloth or leather, if you’d like.

Love your wall color and hutch, so pretty.

We have saddle stools that push under the overhang on our island. It works out well for us that way as we serve from our island and it allows people to stand at both the front of the island and back to serve themselves food.

I would be hesitant about the rush seat. For me it comes down to cleaning. Think of all the crumbs that will get caught in the rush and anything that spills.
