The roof is black and new and the windows were all just replaced. The house is very ugly I think but it has potential. Am I right in my color choices and what needs painted black and what to leave alone. TIA

I would not do white because your windows are white. I think a nice blue would highlight the features. I like the simple geometry of the roof in front. White on white would lose that. I'd paint the cement foundation a darker shade of blue or put in foundation shrubs. I'd plant a tree to break up the space between the door and the windows on the front. You want one that will still fit the space at a mature size. Or maybe a large shrub. Black trim is not common.

    This blue would be nice.

Here's a white house with black trim. But they have beefier window trim and they didn't do the eaves. I haven't seen a house where the roofline is in black. Your roofline is one of your better features. If you just painted your existing window trim black and left the roofline white, you'd have a pretty boring house.

Any color that isn't pale would work well with your white windows and roofline. Forest green, a gray, etc.

Thanks so much for your input. Do you think the white and black would be OK if we put up wider trim on the windows? I was also thinking black shutters maybe.

I don't think you can put wider trim on your windows, because it will compete with the roofline on the front. You can't put wider trim around the window by the back door. If your windows are vinyl, it's harder to paint them, leaving you with white windows in a black frame. If you like black and white, you could do dark gray with white trim.

It's your house, you can paint it whatever color you like, I just think a medium to dark color with white trim would be far more flattering to your house and its unique features. I will note that a new paint job is always an improvement, so you'll be happy with whatever you do.

Again, to me, the roofline is the best feature. MCM building focuses on simple, interesting shapes without a lot of details. That's what I'd highlight. You'll lose it if you keep the roofline white with white paint and I just haven't seen anyone paint the roofline black on a white house with black trim.

White and black is really trendy now and it can look great on a modern farmhouse, but you don't have a modern farmhouse. I suspect the trend will move on, as if often does. What happens with trends is over time, too many people jump on the trend and apply it where it's not a good fit and then when there are a lot of bad implementations, people hate the trend and something else is hot, new and trendy.

Thanks so much I was just looking at houses with darker colors and I do like the darker grays with the white. The house I live in now is grayish blue and white and I do like it too, The house is just so large and kinda ugly on the exterior so I am just wanting to help it anyway we can. LOL

Also which do you think would look better around the bottom of the sunroom. Stone or wood?

This looks like a picture of the back of the house and a picture of the side of the house. What does the front of the house look like?

The house needs a coat of paint and landscaping.

Pick a color that you like that will look good with white windows and a black room. I would use a color (green/blue) rather than another neutral.

    Don't add shutters.

Ditto on NO shutters. These windows are not designed for them.

Your house will not look right with shutters. Shutters (even faux non-working ones) should look like they would cover the window if the shutters were closed. You have several double wide windows - shutters won't be appropriate for those. You also have at least one window that doesn't have room for a shutter on the left side (upper left window on the back of the house).

It would be helpful if you would add a photo that shows the entire front of the house - the one you've posted cuts off part of the right side. It looks like there is a big empty space to the left of the door - it seems like there should be a window(s) - a photo of the entire front would really help.

Regarding your question about whether stone or wood should be added on the bottom of the sunroom - I think that it would be odd to add stone (or wood) to just that area of your house. I would spend money on landscaping (both hard and soft). It would be nice if you added a patio to the area off of the sunroom + soft landscaping = shrubs/plants/etc. If you did that, the empty space on the bottom of the sunroom wouldn't even be noticeable.

    Thanks so much everyone.

Here is another pic of the front right corner of the house if it helps at all.

No shutters, don’t add stone to the sunroom. You have white vinyl windows so all your trim should be white. Choose a nice color for the lap siding (really any color you like) and then put in landscaping. If I have a budget I would start by replacing the traditional wood door with a more contemporary option with a receded glass sidelight. I would have explored enlarging some windows but that ship has sailed.

Once those tweaks are made you need landscaping. Trees. Shrubs. Perennials. Less grass.

I think black trim (which I like) might be too harsh for the house. But it is your choice, of course.

I suggest you add trim around the white windows. This would be one of my choices for you exterior: green for all the trim and a natural color for siding.

    Guessing this combination

Paint the storm door and sidelight trim the same. Leave the wood door and see how it looks.

There does not appear to be a good way to beef up the trim in order to paint it a contrasting color. Yes, that nice slant over the front door is the feature to highlight by keep trim white and painting house body a darker color.

Yes to good landscaping near the entry including something that will get reasonably tall but still fit there and gorgeous pots on either side of the door ( cheaper than redoing front step and sidewalk)

I might paint the door white so storm door matches.

Sigh. Again, my suggestion is dismissed by a commentator.

elcieg I am sorry if you thought I didn't respond to your suggestion. I thought it was a good suggestion and it is greatly appreciated by me that you took the time to reply.

@elcieg, both sides in the pics above have windows on the corner of the house, leaving no room for added trim. You can see this in the corner pic the OP posted below. It's just not a feasible option for this house.
