Soapstone to be or not to be

While I was researching Soapstone countertops, I saw that most of what was online was old and dated. I installed Soapstone, un-oiled tops in Janurary.We cook, I cook. If you think you might like (LOVE!) Soapstone, go for it. Like granite, you choose your slab, the movement, the color. I risk to say those that lean towards ss like rocks...Everytime you wipe your countertop, you see the depth of ss, especially when unsealed.I have had things 'frying' on the stove, and there are no splotches, I can't clean yet with a good soapysponge. One day I may want to oil them, but even after greasy spoons, etc, (and a squirter of powerwash)..power wash...Still in love!

That is so awesome to read! My soapstone counters will be installed in 4 days and I cannot wait. Renovated last house and really loved my granite and that was 10 years ago. Renovating our Log home on a lake and I just couldn't do quartz in this environment and my heart pulled me to soapstone. I am sure I will love it too!

I also love soapstone, and the kitchens posted here that have it are beautiful! Far from old and dated.

Hello! I will post some pictures. Mine is just 'black' soapstone, but with plenty of white runs and flecks of gold in it. Caribookat - soapstone will look great in a log home. We have a true 1800s old farmhouse, and our kitchen was the new edition, so I didn't want everything to be stark and white... Island counter top will be white oak butcher block.

As much as I love soapstone, I ended up getting a leathered black granite that I love (cleans like a dream.) We used it in the kitchen, a powder room, lower level bar, and fireplace hearth.
Do a search for darbuka’s kitchen. I believe her SS is Belvedere and it’s beautiful!

Here are my soapstone counters, now 9+ years old. Belvedere, a very hard variety with gorgeous turquoise and white veins. Installed by M. Teixeira.

Best decision we ever made. We don’t oil. Just let the stone do its thing. Some areas, like at the rangetop and sink, have patinaed more than less used areas, and that’s fine with us.

chicagoans - your leathered black granite is beautiful. Nice how you also used it in other areas of your home, as well. Very cool light fixture above the kitchen sink!

darbuka - I always love seeing your kitchen and gorgeous Belvedere ss. I like the way your outlets/switchplates (the color) blend into the backsplash...pretty amazing actually.

leschrkr - white oak butcher block on the island will look amazing. I like your inspiration photo. Please post a photo(s) of your kitchen when you can.

caribookat - I'm sure you are busy renovating the log home. Is the soapstone installed, yet?
