Vanity Mirror Height

last year

First of all, this is not my bathroom! It is similar in size and layout though. The second picture is my very crude rendition of what my bathroom will look like.

The floor will be charcoal, 12 by 24, tile and the side walls will be white, 12 by 24, gloss tile. The white tile will go up 4’ on both sides of the room and the back wall is very similar to the aqua in the picture.

There will be a 60” vanity. I plan to get a 60” mirror over the vanity.

Finally my question:

Do you think a 36” high mirror is too high or just right?

This will leave approximately 10-12” between the top of the mirror and the ceiling.

Thank you so much for your help with this!!

I’d say you need to consider two factors: how tall are you? and do you do your own housecleaning? I’ve decided that my next bathroom remodel, the mirror won’t be any taller than I can reach without climbing on the counter!

Haha!! I hadn’t thought of that, but very good point.

What kind of lighting do you plan to have?

Ceiling lights will cast a shadow. 12" isn't enough room for wall mounted fixtures over a mirror.

Example of full mirror over vanity. One of the many things I don't care for in this photo is the shower reflection. Sounds like yours will reflect a wall (art? towels?).

Single or double sink? I would do a smaller mirror so you can have sconces if it's a single sink vanity. More attractive, and sconces provide better quality lighting. 60" is tight for two sinks unless you really want two sinks and don't value the counterspace as much.

Yes, mine will reflect a wall. I will probably hang a piece of art there. The vanity will have a single offset sink to the left. This makes every mirror configuration not feel right. I could get a shorter mirror and use 2 sets of wall mounted lights. I was just planning to have 2 4” recessed lights over the vanity and 2 more over the tub. The sink is offset because I did not want to move plumbing. There is a 36” sink cabinet on the left and a

24” drawer stack on the right.

I had considered a 60” medicine cabinet because I love the shallow storage, but there is no configuration in which the doors of the med cab are not off center.

Have you considered adding a cabinet stack over the drawer stack like in this photo? That would make the off-center mirror seem purposeful.

I would also opt for a backlit mirror. Then, you don't have to worry so much about where a sconce could go and the backlighting would banish the shadow from the overhead can.

FWIW, the apartment we've recently moved to has framed bathroom mirrors that cover the entire wall behind the sinks, ending about 6" below the ceiling, and I like it, since they also reflect the viewer almost full length.

As for reaching the high-up areas to clean - there are these extendable scrubber/squeegees. I have one I got to reach the roof of my car.

I second the idea of the cabinet stack to make the off center mirror not so odd.

We remodeled our bath last year. Ours is a bit different. 2 separate 55 inch (I think) vanities. We did mirrors with sconces on each side. I believe the mirrors are 36 inches high.

We also did white subway on the walls.

jsk- very pretty!! I love your dark cabinets with all of the white.

fun2bhere- I woke up in the middle of the night a few nights ago thinking about a shllow cabinet tower over the drawer stack!! haha, I must have been dreaming about mirrors and storage.

I do like that idea, but was afraid it might feel crowded. I love the idea of shallow storage. Thanks for all of the pictures.

Carolb- thanks for letting me know you like your large framed mirror. The one I am considering has a very narrow frame.

The frames here are simple white molding about 1 1/4" wide - they kind of disappear.
