Please help find a rug that would work in this room.

Just moved to a new house without carpet and need a rug for this room. Ignore pictures leaning against the wall as we have just moved in and haven't finished decorating. Off to the right in this picture is a gold upholstered chair that matches the gold accents in the couch.

What color rug would look best in this room and pull it altogether and make the room more cozy? I'm guessing with the plaid couch that I need a solid color. I have no design sense whatsoever so appreciate all the help.

You can do a pattern ... but you have to get the colors and scale right.

But for me the real question would be ... do you want to be making design decisions based on a fabric pattern/color from 1980 - 1990 ?

Fine if you do, but I've regretted the times I built a design plan around something I should have changed from the start!

I've thought about replacing the couch but my entire house is in the same color scheme much like the picture above (red, green, maroon, gold) including a green sectional in my family room I purchased just a couple of years ago. If I were to purchase a new couch today, I would still purchase one in that same color family. I'm not a fan of the current trend of white or grey couches. Plus, that couch is comfortable and in very good condition. Despite the colors, it's not that old. Definitely something to consider though.
