LG Top Loader with Agitator or Front Loader

Hello! Looking for direct recommendations for those who own a washing machine with an agitator (I can only seem to find LG or Speed Queen that makes them) or an LG front loader. I currectly own a very old top loading washing machine with an agitator and I love the way it works! I love to soak my dirty clothes in there with boiling hot water (son's game clothing from sports). I won't be able to do that if I buy at front loader, however I've read that front loaders are the best for modern day washing machines. I'm biased because I love the way the top loader works but I'm wondering if the LG toploader with agitator works as efficiently \as something like their front loader ThinQ line. Any feedback is welcomed and appreciated. We are currently remodeling our laundry room and cabinetry depends on if we go front loader or top loader.

How are you getting boiling water into your washer? Soaking should be in warm or tepid water to avoid setting-in some types of stains, then follow with a hot wash if needed. Super-hot temperatures curtail detergent enzyme function (but helps promotes oxygen bleach), which is why immediate hot soaking is not advised.

BTW, frontloaders with an onboard heater can attain considerably hot temperatures via a Sanitize cycle or a Steam option. They start at a lower temperature to avoid set-in of the temp sensitive type of soils, then ramp up the heat.

I would choose a frontloader, absolutely, if I needed to buy a new washer.

My LG front loader has a pre wash cycle that you can add to the main cycle. Might be something that could work for your sons really dirty clothes. Uses cold water though but then you could use the sanitize cycle for the maIn cycle which uses very hot water.

I put the clothes into the washing machine with hot water on a small load, then I boil water on the stove and add it to the water in the washing machine. I didn't know @dadoes this infomation what you explained makes sense. This is the way I've removed stains with no issues. Thank you for informing me!

In CR's tests the LG WM4000HWA 27 Inch Smart Front Load Washer and LG WT8405CW 27 Inch Top Load Washer performed about the same though the front-loader was more energy efficient. The front loader has a pre-wash option. The top-loader has heavy duty cycle and a deep-fill option. The top-loader vibrated less so if your floor wasn't solid you might choose it.

Jessica Cardenas, you didn't reference the brand/model of your "very old" machine. The only current choices with an agitator that functions like a typical "very old" washer may be a Speed Queen TC5 (available only at independent dealers, no big-box stores), or an Amana NTW4516FW (Amana is a Whirlpool brand). Huge majority of the rest have "agipellers" which is low-profile impeller with a centerpost added to look like a traditional agitator but it doesn't function quite the same way.

I have a Whirpool top loader with an agitator, bought about 8.5 years ago when I moved to this house. I wish I would have gotten a front loader. This things eats laundry -- my clothes, towels and bedding fray and rip much more readily in this machine than any other I've ever had (including two other top loaders with an agitator, and one agitator-less top loader).

I'm planning on getting either Asko or Miele machines with on-board heaters when I remodel my laundry room (or these machines die, whichever comes first). The important part here is the on-board heater. The "hot" cycle on my machine now? I can stick my arm in the machine and barely feel the warmth. What a joke.

Have you adjusted the hot and cold water valves to change the ratio of hot to cold water entering the machine? I set my washer's temperature setting to "warm" and then turned the cold water valve until the incoming water felt warm.

Any recommendaitons on 4.5 or 5 cubic feet. Does it make a big difference?
