renovating cape cod

Looking for ways to maximize the space of our cape cod, ideally within the same footprint but also open to more than that (would have to be backwards as we are close to neighbors on both sides).

Kitchen needs updating regardless, so will minimally update current footprint or knock down the wall between kitchen and dining room. Wish there was a way we could open this up even more but I think we’re limited by the stairs and chimney.

The front of the house is ground level and the back is one story above ground. We have a great backyard but I hate that, from this main level, I can’t see my kids when they are playing out there. Probably no easy fix for this, but perhaps make a door out of the window in the living room and add a deck off that?

At first glance:

I’d turn the study into more of a den/family room.
Expand the kitchen into part of the dining room and use part of the living room as the home office, if you need one.
What do you think of that?

Thank you! I should have noted that we don’t need a family room - we have that in the lower level (we have three levels of this same size). Looking to open up the space but I’m realizing that’ll be hard without an addition to fill in one side of the “upside down T”

So you can see them from the Living Room? You could flip the kitchen/diner and living room, so that your kitchen overlooks the back yard.

depends on what you want.

place kitchen over on the right ....at the rear of living room...place a dining zone near fireplace and rest of that big room add some living room furniture. Turn the existing kitchen into an entry vestibule but give a foot or so back to the "dining room " so it can be a parlor or small living room if you want. if you remove the walk through kitchen that you now have maybe the half bath could be renovated and get a shower stall so the study can be an ensuite bedroom someday.

a table or banquette along with kitchen on the right side . but not sure what you really want to do....the existing kitchen w walkway down the middle is like a closet or mudroom / very constrained ....you have spaces but what scope of reconfiguring things has your interest?
