I've come to see huge beeches as being on borrowed time...at least down here, maybe it's different in New England. Chanticleer had to remove a huge one about 15 years ago. In the next county over from me, in Havre de Grace, I'm aware of an absolutely gigantic one down near the water that had to be removed. (in fact, me seeing that tree in the early 2000s, when I was driving from the DC area to New Jersey for work, was what made me realize, 'wow, there's this part of Maryland that feels more like the northeast', because I saw that, birch and horse chestnut trees, and rhododendrons)

FWIW I meant the Euro beech cultivars. And to clarify, they are fine on individual plant collector timelines! It's just, don't expect them to last 100+ years.

European beech has perhaps, for me, the only red/purple/copper-leafed cultivar that I not only don't despise, but find attractive. Another "somewhat" example was one on my childhood lot -- the old hardly-nowaday-known 'Schwedler' Norway maple that leafed out reddish, but turned an acceptable bronze-green in summer. The color of the common 'Purple-leafed' Norway maples you see now is dismal-looking.

Edit: In addition, there was a reddish/green-leafed redbud cultivar I saw that was handsome.
