Small Kitchen Remodel: Advice on Cabinet Layout with Fixed Soffits

Hello Houzz Community,

We have a small kitchen that has been taken down to the studs.

DISCLAIMER: I do not have the ability to move the sewer and water lines in the vertical soffit or the ductwork in the horizontal soffit — these must remain as-is.

Unfortunately, we haven’t received much support from the cabinet manufacturers on the design, so we’re turning to this platform for assistance.

I believe the refrigerator wall is good as-is (we’ll be installing a counter-depth refrigerator), but am open to feedback to this section as well. Ultimately, I would love suggestions on how to incorporate a couple of wall cabinets on the window side to increase storage without making the kitchen feel cramped or cluttered and improve the layout of the range wall.

Our contractor suggested adding soffit along the range wall and stopping the soffit at the end of the 21" drawer base cabinet. However, I’m concerned that stopping it short of the wall would look awkward. If we extend the soffit, I think it would make more sense for it to continue to the slope of the basement door.

I know this is a lot of information, but any design assistance, ideas, or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

eliminate the "down to counter" cabinet in the corner. I'd probably wrap the corner over to near window trim w wall cabinets. RE peninsula......I''d adjust the depth of the peninsula cabinet. 12 inch depth where you instead want at least 18 or 21 inch depth for drawers is a compromise too far. I'd reduce the sink to single bowl..... pick a reduced sink base ...skooch dishwasher over [consider 18 in dishwasher] .. add depth then to the peninsula drawer cabinet. Have you paced or taped out how wide the cabinet at peninsula can be and still stand to open fridge? I might get a standard 30 in fridge and center it ......then enjoy the benefit of a near full depth cabinet w rollouts on the right ...even 15 inch wide w rollouts is a lot more efficient . then restrict the shallow cabinetry to the left side of fridge only. Can the hinged door be removed for a smooth passage through there? where does the little door lead?

eliminate the expense of cabinet depth fridge..instead w a standard depth 30 in wide appliance use the funds for a more efficient storage column like these...on your right side........they can be broken into upper /lower if you want.

I have a teeny u shape kitchen with an 18 in dishwasher and 27 single bowl sink and it works great.

I agree on watching the opening width at the peninsula end. You need to be able to get the fridge and range in! See what code has to say about the distance of cabinetry to a wall, this was something we ran into in our planning.

Strong agree on the corner counter cab, really inconvenient.

Oh oops to your actual questions. I don't see any reason you cannot have wall cabinets on the window side. I would strongly consider building out a soffit over the stove wall as well. I think it looks better than just having the cabinets end with a gap, and will make sense esp if you have cabinetry on the window wall.

My kitchen also has soffits lol, they extend past the cabinet depth so we used them for the can loghts. Our soffits are genuinely goofy so we just did the best we could.

@rebasheba is there anything you would have done differently if you could? or is there something as time went on you missed?

I previously considered an 18” dishwasher but they’re double the price of a dog on 24” dishwasher 😡

I would say if you can swing it, I encourage you to look at the Bosch 18 DW, we think it's great. If you can do that, and reduce the sink base size (you can put a sink in a base of the same size if it's strapped in place) then you can create a lower cab for baking sheets, cutting boards and such.

For the uppers, most on this board recommend an easy reach corner cabinet, I like it a lot over the diagonal style.

I miss having vertical storage, which you do have so enjoy that :)
