Wide plank hardwood requires more stable humidity then narrow width hardwood for certain. That is a fact.

You are setting yourself up for failure, even if you choose engineered. Old houses without AC had narrower width floors to manage the seasonal expansion and contraction. Or, they had big gaps between wider boards that were filled with oakum, to allow that expansion and contraction. If you cannot manage to have your humidity controlled to the 35-55% range, then you need narrow width floors, and to expect a lot more movement, both.

Current engineered flooring IS NOT more prone to expansion and contraction than solid hardwood. It has a core, at least the quality products, of birch or eucalyptus hardwood 5 or 7 layers pressure glued in different directions for stability. A 4 or 6mm top layer of European Oak can be refinished 2 to 3 times. The same number of times as solid with a tongue and groove. Maintaining temp and humidity level is more important for wood flooring than for laminate or lvp. A dehumidifier for summer should be a component in your house to reduce mold possibilities no matter what flooring you choose.

In 5 years the click join system of some lvp can begin to fail. So, choose carefully if you go lvp. Modine by Flooret has one of the better systems. They sell direct.

I’m with hubs. I put in LVP when I did a major remodel as I’ve ruined hardwood before (moisture from potted plants). It is gorgeous and has stood up well to kids, dogs, plants, etc. No regrets at all.
