Living Room Seating

I need help improving seating in our living room. The sofa needs to stay, but I would like suggestions for new chairs. Also, any ideas how to add additional seating to this space?

What are the measurements of the room?

Please add a photo of the wall behind the couch.

The room is 17 1/2 feet from the opening to the window and 19 feet wide. Attached is a picture of the sofa and behind. Thank you!!

What about adding another couch vs chairs and you’ll gain one extra seat and less chairs may make the room feel less busy/more grounded.

Consider new decor as well to help coordinate the new seating and suggest a less busy rug to help make room feel larger and lighter.

Can you add a photo straight taken from behind the two chairs showing the full wall that the sideboard/TV/art are on so we can see how the sideboard is positioned relative to all your seating?

@BeverlyFLADeziner‘s and @Maureen layouts seem to be the best options. The one post by Bev on the left mostly mirrors your current arrangement. But in your photo your single chair is off the rug and doesn’t seem connected to the main grouping as it is pushed back so it doesn’t block the TV. I am wondering whether your sideboard/TV/art need to slide down a bit away from the fireplace wall so you can pull that single chair closer and onto the rug.

If you don’t need more than 6-7 seats on a regular basis, do you have any chairs you can pull in from other areas when you need to seat > 6 people?

What size is the rug? I am wondering if it needs to be larger.

Thank you so much for your help. Attached is the additional picture you requested. I agree that seating is at capacity and the best bet is to have additional chairs nearby. Do you have any color and style suggestions for new chairs in the room? It’s obviously the living room, so they need to be comfortable.suggestions for

Seeing entire room, a couch vs chairs would be my choice (+ chair in corner).

Be prepared, as one thing will lead to another…consider a larger rug and down the road a large square coffee table. Suggest heading lighter and softer with some brown to tie in your leather couch, creating harmony.

Your current arrangement is good (either 2 couches + chair or 1 couch + 3 chairs) but add a larger rug and pull the 3rd chair into the seating arrangement. Also check whether the seating grouping maximizes the available space - can any furniture be moved back to create a larger seating area?

Alternatively, have you ever tried the couch or chairs where the console/TV is with the console/TV on the wall behind where the two chairs are now? Without your floor plan with measurements it‘s hard to envision if this is a better use of space.

No suggestions for new chair or sofa style and colors but choose the seating colors in conjunction with choosing a new larger rug if you decide to do so. I need to try chairs/sofas in person for comfort.

Good luck, please post after photos!

The size of our current tug is 9 1/2 x 13. What size do you recommend?

I am guessing the two chairs facing TV are where you usually sit. If current sofa has to stay, it will be easier to coordinate with 3 new chairs, and a large ottoman instead of dark wooden coffee table. Trays on the ottoman so it can also serve as coffee table. Agree a larger, less busy rug. Take opportunity to re-evaluate your decor pieces and placement.
