Those are nice looking chairs, but if they’ve never been comfortable, don’t reupholster them. Take some time to visit a couple furniture stores and try things out. Bring the measurements of your current chairs and look for something similar. You might come away with sticker shock, but good reupholstery work is also pricey.

I have a good upholsterer in my area that I have used a few times. Their labor rates are quite reasonable, maybe even "cheap" ... what drives the price way up is choosing good quality performance fabrics, that is 85% of the total re-upholstery cost.

Not sure I would reupholster a chair that I didn't find comfortable.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions. I should have mentioned that other people in my household find these chairs comfortable, namely my kids and my parents. I am also not likely to buy something of this price range at this point.

I would never replace quality chairs with crap made in China. Your upholsterer might be able to make some adjustments that make the chairs more comfy for you, but if others find them sittable, I'd just let them have the chairs and I'd sit on the sofa.

What you don't find comfortable because the cushions are flat. A good reupholster will fix that issue. And, yes I would reupholster the chairs because today's price of your Sonoma chair is $2,650.00. An investment in Stickley furniture is a life time choice. I suggest you take a look at Stickley fabrics, too. Keep the chairs as authentic as you can.

Yes, it sure is worth it. Stickley furniture is USA made, holds its value, and the chairs have more than a lifetime of use. Find a good upholsterer and ask him to recondition the seat cushions. At today's price, the Sonoma chair is $2500.00. Suggest you even buy fabric from Stickley

I’ve recovered dining chairs, occasional chairs and a set of Bergere chairs twice (similar to below) and have no regrets. There is a Kobe outlet and a discount designers’ shop in Toronto which saved a lot of money…if you live in a big city, look into discount outlets.

Don’t decide on a fabric quickly…consider content and be prepared to spend a lot of time narrowing down. The padding/support is extremely important and the legs may need touching up so be sure to ask about added costs. I used a retired upholster, so if interested in that option ask around as you’ll save a lot of money (just may take longer). Quotes will help with your decision and be sure you are willing to invest the time.

They are very nice chairs and if others in your family find them comfortable, then its worth having them reupholstered. i would choose a Stickley chair over anything you could buy today online, which are not as well made. Disposable furniture is a terrible trend--very bad for the planet.

Yes, if others in the family find them comfortable and use them then for sure reupholster. They will be better made than anything else you will find today. Hell, who knows if Stickley is even made as well as it was 25 years ago

I think chair comfort is a personal thing but if you sit on the sofa and others find the chairs comfy the brand for sure is worth a redo but that price is going to shock you a good upholstery job is not cheap . This is however a good example of saving an excellent quality piece and spending the money to keep it.

I paid $540 each, to reupholster larger lounge/swivel chairs with a skirt and fully upholstered seat and back cushion. Self welt at all seams. The Thibaut performance fabric cost around $3,000 to cover both chairs. So $4,080 total for two chairs.

Two new mid/high end chairs would cost close to twice the price. Chairs have gotten very expensive, so it was definitely cheaper to reupholster and I got a much better fabric (quality and durability) than the chair manufacturer would offer as a standard option.
