If it were me, I would remove the open shelving and the tall shelf unit and wallpaper the room - then depending on measurements, I’d place a shallow closed storage unit to the right of the washer for items not used often -

for laundry supplies, I would want them within easy reach of the washer, perhaps on a small shelf above but hard to tell from photos

I would look into the cost of having the washer/dryer next to each other to free up some great space for storage.

As lalaGirl says, remove all the shelves, the tall bookcase, and other items from the room. Go to Ikea (for tabletop/desktop with adjustable legs) or have a big box store cut a long shelf the depth of the washer. Get adjustable legs to hold up shelf at the washing machine level. Take your old wall shelves and hang them underneath the long tabletop/desktop shelf. Or get some rolling shelves as shown below. Store your supplies underneath, accessible but out of sight. In such a small space you want open shelves, not cabinets, but they can go under custom tabletop. If you want to get fancy, yes, wallpaper the room and add coordinating indoor outdoor flat rug. Add a pretty light fixture.

I agree, remove the shelving and that tall cabinet, but, I would buy some cabinets to put the full length of that wall, with a nice countertop. I would then add a nicer shelf above that for some decorative items. That gives you storage, and also a place to fold clothes and easy access to the dryer.

Pay to have dryer electric moved so units can be side by side.

Maybe explain why this layout cannot be better with the W/D next to eachother both for function and design. For sure get rid of the shelving , the dark cabinet and get one unit to hold all the stuff and low enough to use for folding I do not see a lot of stuff that actually needs storage so a low cabinet might do the trick.

What is to the left of the washer, it looks like it could move to the left a bit? What does the area where you were standing to take the picture like?
