should we buy it?

We are thinking about putting an offer on this house but it is so plain, boxy, blah. Any ideas to make it more attractive in any way? I was thinking white body, bahama shutters, bright door? I don’t know…

    I’d nix the bahama shutters.

But yes. Id do a white body. I think what’s missing and what would bring it all together is a dormer.
    Above the door area.

It’s a very nice looking house. I like it. 😊💖

Changing the landscaping would make a huge difference.

What's it like inside? You don't spend much time looking at the outside of your house, but you live with the interior spaces every day. Are the rooms appropriately sized, are the traffic flows and mix of private/public space good for your lifestyle? Does the amount of light/windows inside suit your tastes. How much deferred maintenance is there? And then of course there is location, location, and location.

It's a perfectly nice looking house from the outside, IMO, but that's pretty far down on the my list of criteria. Nothing wrong that ripping out most of that lawn and replacing it with native perennials wouldn't fix.

Charming home! I would focus first on hardscaping and landscaping.

I like the house. I think its the landscaping that make it look a bit off. I would pull it all out and redo it.

The roof looks like the problem. It overwhelms the house, and looks like a pointed hat. But that is a very expensive fix. I would concentrate on whether the interior works for you first.

If it's truly in need of a paint job, then sure paint it white if you like, otherwise I think it's a great cheery color. Painting isn't cheap so no need to start there if it's in good shape. I agree with those who have said that the landscaping could be cleaned up. I love boxwoods, but they just don't look very good as they are, as with the lower roof line, they are just making the door disappear.

I also think the inside is much more important than the outside when it comes to a house, but this one looks fine on outside.

If you like the inside, can afford it, can afford the repairs and upkeep, and the location is good then get it. The outside is very workable and can look down right beautiful.

    - Problem - the green provides no contrast to the grass. Fix - paint something other than green.

    - Problem - the roof is an odd shape in that the whole thing slopes down and covers the porch. There is no separate roof line for the porch. Fix - run a narrow pergola around the front and side of the house so there is the illusion of another roof line. It solves the problem of the roof feeling like it is a cliff drop.

    - Problem - the hedges add no dimension to the front of the house. They just carry the green of the lawn up on to the house. Fix - add foundation plantings that have varied size, shape, texture, and color. And, significantly widen the walk way between the hedges and porch.

I love simple exteriors on homes all the jigs anf jogs and bumpouts are IMO just junk on a home . I love MCM homes for the simplicity of the exteriors . Waht this home needs is a huge landscping plan to make it fabulous . I hate Bahama shutters why would you think those would work?IMO not even the shutters shown work . IMO the window grids are not the best choice either . I do agree if the interior is great the exterior can be done later and more suited to your style .

The reasons to buy a house are not ”style” like on househunters. Buy a house that is in the area you want to live in, has the space you need for your family and lifestyle and that you can afford. THEN have fun fixing it up.

That is such a classic roof shape in the south and tropics. A dormer would be fine if it adds to the home- ie raise the ceiling in the hall so the dormer lights the interior. Otherwise the entire ‘problem’ is the stupid hedges. They are just simply terrible. They lower the whole front of the house so it looks like it is sinking into the ground.

I think the house would look great in almost any shade of blue, and yes, the squared off hedges are not doing the house any favors.

Yes, you can see the side of the house with no hedges looks much nicer, not squat. I actually love the green paint and the green lawn together. The current white trim and white shutters are very nice.

Since the front door is so recessed, yes a bright color would be nice, like Coral. And big terracotta or blue flower pots with white flowers...lovely.

For a house in FL, where you can grow plants year round in most areas, that is the most uninspiring front landscaping. Lots of plant varieties you can plant to add color, texture & height.

There are about a dozen types of plants you see everywhere in FL. Why? Because they are tried and true varieties that usually thrive in that climate.

The one type of plant in the photos I have not had luck with are Bromeliads. The beds near our house stay too wet and they prefer drier soil. The ones I have in pots are thriving and barely get watered.

I would want to repaint the whole inside of the house!

How do we know this is Florida?

    Google!

First hint was what looks like Ixora bushes in the front. Second hint was what looks like a screened pool cage at rear of the side view of the house. I googled to confirm the hints.
