Misc. Random House updates

ETA Not Penguin Random House.

Who would believe a Penguin could write all those books, btw

***This is a really boring post but now it is just a matter of stubbornness. This will be the third attempt to post this fabulous and exciting post. ***

So the old/new mudroom was going to have a gray and white checkerboard vinyl tile floor (Harvey Maria UK).But since the K floor needed to be repainted post fire, I decided to have the wooden K floor painted gray and white checkerboard. It would be too much to have the mudroom so similar, plus I want something sturdier out there. What to choose then?

Given that the mudroom has nickelgap panelling on 3 sides, cedar shake on one side, and a beadboard ceiling, I didn't think having a fourth, different would product make sense.

I decided to use a dark green vinyl tile for my new/new mudroom. I think it has a retro summer cabin feel and it is very practical. Pal suggested Tarkett commercial tile (I think he has it in black in his K) and I ordered Evergreen.

I decided to change the outdoor light and indoor sconce in the mudroom to what Barn Electric calls "Vintage Green." I wanted to make sure they didn't clash. Today I took the light housing and put it with the tile sample. Talk about matching!?

Looks like I am the only person seeing this post more than once🤷‍♀️

It’s a great match color wise.
    So odd.
Hopefully the posters you want to see this do.

Boards seem a little weird today. Maybe others are having issues.

I am only just now seeing this post. How dies the NYT’s green bench look with the green floor?

Also just seeing this post now. I guess things are being restored slowly.

That match is amazing! Clearly meant to be. Can't wait to see it rebuilt and done.

Just seeing this. Could be because when Houzz go so glitchy, I stopped wasting my time trying to read it.

    Love that green!

New post for me. Love the green and the match is right on. Looking forward to seeing the finished room.

Great vintage vibe and color perfection 😘 I’m really

looking forward to The Great Mudroom Reveal!

(Also just seeing this. No point in reporting it, the reaction would undoubtedly be the usual… oh, is something wrong with the site? If we wait long enough it will probably fix itself. )

Meeting with the painter today about my checkerboard (diamond, actually) K and Butler's pantry floor. I bought a pack of 18"vinyl tiles to help us lay it out. This morning a company came and moved everything, including appliances, out of my K and into storage. Since my K is unfitted, everything could be removed save one tall glass cabinet original to the house.

This is an aspect that had not occurred to me, since we had the K floor painted during our original reno and it was empty then, too (had to remove an old wood stove! did I ever show my K before photos, OMG). I am sure it is not cheap to do this.

@localeater The bench is in storage so I will have to see. I'm a little worried about the bench because DH says he thinks the color changed due to proximity to the fire itself. It will be very hard to replace, but that will mostly be Chubb's problem.

We are scheduled to be back in by month end, though not all will be complete. That doesn't matter, because we can do without a K for a week or so. We actually had a family sleepover there on Mother's Day eve. We were going to church the next morning so it was far more convenient than our current rental (walkable vs 25 min or so drive). I had the cleaners bring the bedding back and some towels. They have a website with pics of everything they removed, and i just select what I want and they bring it the next day. Wasteful but sometimes needed.

I like it. Do you have a link for other Tarkett tile like this? I am looking, but only see large area tiles or LVT. Thanks.

So we were at the house this am. A few things.

Here is the lobster pillow with the area rug on the 3rd floor landing. I see a cherry red in each. The rug came with the house and I don't hate it so I was ok with it up on the 3rd floor landing.

The pillow does not, strictly speaking, match the lamp and boat but it "goes." I've abandoned the idea of seat cushions; too much. Not 100% sold on the pillows; more options on the way.

This is a doctored photo. AI got rid of my car in the driveway, but carried off a sail with it; can you tell? It did not offer to nix the dumpster for me.

I don't think the NYT bench was damaged, because the color is ~ the same on all sides; I would think heat damage would be uneven. I like it w the green tile floor. It does not match, but it "rhymes.".

I took this to the framer, it will go in the K as a reminder of our Portugal trip (and I guess my rented handbag too LOL).

My Mary Maguires on the first landing. The door on the right is to the back stairs to the K and is always propped open. Tough space for art. The art is centered on the staircase. Sitll not sure.

    Next up...

I can’t believe you said , ”we can solve for n” to a contractor. You are now the champion of math teachers everywhere.

^^^And no one but us will ever know. I love that you can visually get away with it too. I can’t believe that your contractor actually ’got it’! What a gem!

My DH a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry had a wonderful laugh as I read this to him he looked at the green line and said :

diagonal of a square is the sq rt (2) x the side length of the square. The length of the green line is divided into ”n” diagonals. Solve for n. n x the sq rt (2) x the side length of the square is = to the length of the green line.

Glad he can do this .… me not a chance!

LOL, @Still trailing! I didn't recall even the phrase "diagonal of a square." I was thinking that I was trying to find the base of an isosceles triangle with two 18" sides, and figured I could do that by turning them into 2 right triangles. While I was busy unearthing the Pythagorean theorem from the crevices of my brain, the contractor was doing his own thing. He measured everything in cm too for some reason.

LOL @localeater. I would like to thank Mr Bowen, my 7th grade algebra teacher. I still remember he was a big tall goofy guy and wore vests that his wife crocheted. Very 70s.

Centimeters may have divided easier than inches in the layout and they're both on the tape, is all.

Well I most definitely have not seen this thread until now, and what a delightful thread this turned out to be!

I love the solving for the floor happiness, and love everything you've shown.

Really though, using the math skills in REAL life is perfect.

    I forgot to say:

    - Thank goodness the bench is ok. When can we play with new fabric choices for it?

    - The Mary Mcguire wall needs something else.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked localeater

That wall is really tricky. I am thinking maybe a series of small pieces to the right of what is there, in a grouping that extends both higher and lower than the other two. Since it is grasscloth I am loathe to experiment.

I already reordered the same cushion I had before the fire; it was only weeks old. I wanted retro Granma

Walls: shiplap in Stirabout on 3 walls (which are mostly windows), existing cedar shake on 4th wall

    Ceiling: beadboard painted Parma gray

    Wooden Screen Door: Parma gray

    Bench and cushion:

For reference, I had marked up 3 options and the winning suggestion was to center it on the steps coming up from the LR.

Here are two more options I'd considered:

Option 1 is disconcerting since it really wastes a piece of art

I think I might do this option; centering on the wall, solving for a framed item that is "n wide" (HHAHAHA) such that when centered it is not at all occluded by the open door. : )

Then move the two MM to the end of this hall, over the table

Of course if the grasscloth has been ruined by the hangers, I cannot do this.

    Love the bench fabric.

Failed to comment on Larry the Lobster pillow. I like him, he adds whimsy.

Have you ever pondered removing the door? I have an ’always propped open” door and I think about removing it. I dont because sometimes the washer is down that hall and sometimes it seems loud.

  • last month

IDK, I like it, but the fact is it never occurred to me.

  • last month

Love the Maguires on the current wall, would not overthink it and just move them to the right so they are centered on the wall space defined by the open door. Would not remove the door. Also would not move them to the hallway dresser, just a little too vignette-y (is that a word?). I say that as a person who has a hallway vignette with a console table, prints above and the ”right” stuff on the table. I would like something different but know not what that might be…yet.

centered on the wall space defined by the open door

I forgot that one, that was yet another iteration
