I would stay away from a completely blue rug because that’s a pretty big sectional so you want some relief from all that blue. Also you said you had kids and pets so you want a pattern that camouflages the pet hair and kids clutter.

You need a rug that is wider than your sofa. The current width looks very skimpy and makes your sofa look too big for the space.

Pull your sofa 12” off the wall. It will help with the crammed look too.

Lots of rugs will work with your blue couch. Yes, you need a larger rug AND pull the couch off the wall. Leave enough room to put a narrow console behind it so you can add lamps. Here are just a few - all on Wayfair. There are TONS of rug websites to peruse.

If you have children, you may think polypropylene rugs would be better. They’re definitely less money. But if you can swing the expense, a 100% wool rug will wash off easily and last longer. Happy hunting!

I would also suggest centering your couch with the window and turning the dog bed to make it fit.

I am wondering if the sofa is placed on the window wall because of a TV on the opposite side of the room. The problem with pulling the sofa off the the current window wall is that it will oddly block the fireplace.
From the limited pictures it would seem that the chaise part of the sofa should be parallel to the windows, facing the fireplace, and then the size rug currently in the room would be fine.
I do like the blue rug someone suggested above from Horchow. I will also add that the type of dog you own can influence the best rug choice in terms of materials. For example, I have spaniels who naturally have a lot of oils in their coat, wool rugs are a necessity.

Good Morning what is the room size?….looks like the rug should run the other direction..but keep in mind at least a foot of flooring around the perimeter should be exposed.…so a 10x12 rug fits a 11x13 room....also as long as the front legs of all furniture rest on rug givrs you a good guideline.

Though the floors and furniture are a “ neutral” , I like a rug that has a bit of that dark brown( not exact match necessary , but not just pastel-brown/ beige) a bit of the dark blue of sofa, and then some pale neutral and possibly any accent color you plans to use -or at least typically avoid extra colors you plan to avoid as echoing accents). So as a reverse example, I don’t prefer the completely soft-colored, fuzzy pastel-muted rugs here when you have some higher- contrast & deep tones in the room.
