What Austin rose for part shade cover, zone 5

last month

I've come up with two, based on descriptions, not experience. One is Winchester Cathedral (Auscat) and the other is Susan Williams-Ellis (Ausquirk).

I have not grown either one of them, and at this point neither is currently available from any source I have yet found. I suspect it will be easier to find Winchester Catherdral, so of course I immediately decided that the one I really want is the other one!

Has to be white, has to be repeat blooming (I have planted a number of once bloomers), has to be hardy and has to be highly disease resistant. Fragrance is nice, too. Anyway, has anyone ever even grown Susan WS? I never even heard of it until now.

I can't vouch for disease resistance there, but Perdita is one which exhibits a great deal of shade tolerance. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.2210.1

Thanks. Perdita is a very pretty rose, but according to the picture and description it has too much color for this selection. I am looking for a white rose.

Not Austins, but loverly still: Marie Pavie, Lindee and Yvonne Rabier. I'll try to dig up some pics The Tooth Fairy does really well also and is quite hardy, but quite a different aesthetic from the "typical" Austin.

I have grown, and very much like, Marie Pavie. In California it repeats in flushes all the year around. I have put it aside for now due to a tendency to go pink in cooler weather, a flaw of many white roses. If I don't find something that suits me better I may well come back to it.

Yvonne Rabie looks very pretty. This is a new rose for me, but it is listed as hardy to 6b while MP is listed at 4b.

I like the looks of Lindee as well, but it is another 6b rose. Probably not hardy enough.

The name of Tooth Fairy tickled my fancy, but I think I am looking for a showier rose. I have a couple of singles already.

Perhaps no one has yet grown Susan Williams-Ellis. I am growing more and more curious about it.

I just ordered susan this year because Austin says it had great disease resistance but cant be aure yet. I however wouldnt think any Austins would have great disease resistance in such a cooler zone and part shade.

non austins that have great disease resistance here are: cloud 10, Brilliant vigorosa, Easy spirit, Guirlande d’amour and honeymoon. Check on hardiness my zone is much warmer so advice from cooler areas may be better

Those I mentioned here are very hardy to -7F and -20 windchill. Almost tip hardy.Yvonne Rabier is a special rose. I bought mine from Burling, but a few othes carry her. I believe many of the 6b ratings on HMF are fall-back default.

Sorry. I should read the title 1st. I read it as white not what!

'Susan Williams-Ellis' has a delicious fragrance, just like The Mayflower from which it sported.. here in England I found it to be rather short and lacking impact, and I think would be best in a group of 3 or more if affordable... the individual blooms are short lived and a little muddled..

I've lost all my photos of this rose unfortunately. No idea how it performs elsewhere.

I've seen Winchester cathedral growing in a solid zone 5I believe it was in full sun

I've grown both Winchester Cathedral and Susan W-E in my zone 5 garden and they were reasonably hardy for me. They were both in part sun and they survived but like a lot of roses in shade they didn't bloom all that often. I can't smell the fragrance of either of them, but I can't smell most roses anyway. Susan stayed mostly 4' for me and WC was a bit taller. Both had double blooms with a typical Austin look.

Thanks, Cynthia, very helpful in knowing where to place Winchester Cathedral. The spot I have in mind does have several hours of morning sun this time of year. I'll worry about Susan W-E once I actually find it for sale and in stock.

Darlows Enigma is white and does well in part shade, but it gets big. Marie Pavie does well in part shade and so does Fair Bianca, an English Rose with aa strong myrrh scent.
