How to jazz up this kitchen island with hardware

last month
last modified: last month

We have a new kitchen island being installed in a few weeks and I was talked into doing all drawers for functionality. Never had a big kitchen before, so I’m excited but also find this entire face too boring with all the same pulls. (This is just a very, very basic rendering the contractor sent me... nothing I did.) If this was your kitchen, would you do knobs, bar pulls, cup pulls, etc.? I love the look of two pulls per drawer, and also just one. Would love to hear people's preferences in their own homes!

Dimensions:
Both exterior columns are 30 inches wide. Middle two are 27 inches. Bottom drawers will be utilized for heavier items in the kitchen. Top drawers more basic things like silverware, mixing spoons, etc. any advice is appreciated to make this look a little more custom!

Also: I have heard stories about two pulls on a drawer causing issues to the drawer over time. Is this true or something I shouldn’t worry about if the quality of the drawers is good?

Don’t know why pic didn’t attach. Houzz on the iphone is horrible to navigate. Here it is!

I think - have to see the actual island in the kitchen, with finishes etc mostly done, not a low rez rendering with no context.

To me, pulls and knobs are the finishing touches, done last, when the kitchen is otherwise nearly done. Or even after you’ve started using the kitchen, and know this drawer full of pots is harder to move and needs a hefty pull, that cabinet is where you walk and needs a pull that won’t snag clothing, etc.

" I have heard stories about two pulls on a drawer causing issues to the drawer over time."

I've seen this on old drawers that got out of whack because people tried to open the drawer with one hand, pulling on one knob instead of both. Just use a single, centered handle so you can open the drawer with one hand.

Ravinte makes some nice pulls (I used them on closets) which are much less expensive than competitors.

They are the jewelry of the room for sure. I think you will find a plethora of options in each category you mentioned. Most would be balancing all the other elements when making this decision. We need more specific information to be helpful. Over all if your drawers are large and holding heavier items I think a bar would be needed.

    Simple is NOT "boring"

I almost never use more than two sizes of a pull in any kitchen. SINGLE pulls only on drawer faces. Why? Using two on a drawer leads to a yank with one hand off center.........not good .

No matter quality, you want the drawer to be opened from the center......and you only NEED to use on hand to do that!

Second, it starts to look cluttered and more like a dresser.

I'd use a nine inch, one to a drawer for the entire island 27/30 drawers. If there are SIMILAR drawer sizes we cant see on perimeter? Same size, nine inches. Uppers? Six inches OR nine inch, or knobs. All same finish.

"Boring"is eliminated when you start using the kitchen. You are not done, stop staring at that awful rendering, and order samples to test.: ) size and finish.

    Identical all......nine/six! upper lowers all

I like simple laong pulls on drawers and this is my island to show that If you want some accent piece use the top of the island , the drawers need to function no need for fancy.

Not a fan of the extra long pulls spanning the drawer. Mine are in proportion to the size of the drawer. Had knobs in previous home. Pulls are much more ergonomic, and do a better job of keeping grungy fingers away from the cabinetry. I prefer the uniformity/simplicity of all pulls, on doors and drawers.

Island drawers aren't boring and don't need to be "jazzed" up.

The generic rule is that the pull length should be roughly 1/3 of the drawer width. Adjust up/down based on your taste. For me, really long pulls look better in a contemporary design and not in transitional/traditional designs.

Just find one pull size you like and use it for all the drawers on the island.

Sounds like I’m on the right track. I’ve been ordering samples and comparing. I had read people loved two knobs on the first row, then pulls on the rest, just to create something more visually appealing. But a bar pull is just so functional. I have four little kids to keep in mind- all still learning to cook and use the kitchen!

Hardly anyone is using two knobs on first row these days.

I like pulls for all drawers and knobs for upper/lower kitchen cabinet doors. I did use pulls on the doors and drawers of some built-ins, so you can mix things up in different rooms. It really is subjective!

Thanks! If you had to choose between a bar or cup pull...Do you have a preference? Never used a cup pull before until I noticed at my sister's house last night. They felt good, but do those also need to be 1/3''ish of the drawer too?

I realize these questions sound silly and its easy to say "JUST PICK ONE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!", but when you're wanting to buy quality hardware, and you upgrade your island to a nicer wood you'll be drilling into, AND you're at the end and majorly decision fatigued, you want to get it mostly right! I do plan to wait until it's installed to really see what the overall function and vibe will be.

I think it's just prefrence. Some folks might like to put in a big pull of deer antler, or fill every hole with a knob of colorful glass, or put in rows of cup pulls, or use acrylic rods mounted in wrought iron eye screws.. or have simple chrome, elegant brass. and on and on.

Do what you love. Cabinet hardware is probably one of the easiest and quickest things you can change in a kitchen. Outside of cup pulls anyway, heh. If later you don't love it, or someone else does not.. you can always fill those holes with something else :)

It looks like you'll have interesting finishes in your stone backsplash, plus the island has interest since it's different than the cabinets. I'd do all the same hardware on drawers. We did knobs on the island that are different from knobs used on perimeter cabinets. I totally get the fear of drilling into your new island!

You really can't just change pulls so very easily, you can't JUST fill holes that easily either!

That was once sort of true, but the options today, though numbering billions?! Do it once to love it: )

Take your time, look at Top Knobs, which as about the best quality, multiple finishes in multiple sizes.

In the case of Leslie kitchen?

Stainless appliances, the warm wood of Island?

I'd be looking at Top Knobs, Honey Bronze, or stainless. Six and nine"

I never shop beyond Top Knobs.....really the best.

stilley - beautiful kitchen! What size are the rails/stiles on your doors/drawers in your kitchen? I really like the slim/micro/skinny shaker style doors/drawer fronts. I need to decide what width I want to do for my kitchen.

Also, I assume that your perimeter countertops + backsplash behind the range is Taj Mahal? What color are your perimeter cabinets? Your island is beautiful! My plan is for something similar using rift sawn white oak for my island and possibly my lower perimeter cabinets.

    Thanks!

You can't just fill holes that easily on stained or painted cabinets!

I would never want cup pulls! I just managed to regrow my nails to a nice long length and cup pulls would destroy them in no time!

Chispa is right, we agree about holes, and ditto a no to cup pulls.......they are a royal pain in the %^%$$. I even hate them where I did them : ) because she could not let them "go"......

    Nail polish MARKS...on white.

Don't ask about the DW locale.....it' another thing and I won't go there either! Begging went unheeded, lets just say that?

Seeing your kitchens is the most fun on here. I love everyone's personal styles. Glad you walked me back off the ledge that is cup pulls!!

I actually do have Top Knobs Honey Bronze as my number one! I did find a new local brand in my state called Tradition Hardware. It has a color similar to honey bronze called aged brass, and same pricing. Going to compare the two. GLAD I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK!

I'll add.. Rejuvenation prices are a JOKE!
