I can think of a bunch. But it is important to remember that "dwarf" only refers to a conifer's rate of growth, not its ultimate size or habit. How much room do you have available? How many do you want?

It is also important to consider the impact multiple "centerpieces" have on a typical urban/suburban garden. Too many can be distracting, resulting in none standing out as a centerpiece. Kinda like too many variegated plants........they all blend together.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) I need one plant. I have two raised beds that have acid loving plants like Azalea, and the Jakobsen is already in one of those two beds. I need a plant for the other bed. I think each bed stands on its own, but I do have similar types of plants in both so that they don't clash.

You might pick another pine, like Pinus parviflora Fukuzumi. Very sculptural, windswept appearance. Or one of countless dwarf Hinoki cypress, like Chirimen, Alaska or Coralliformis. There are many of these to choose from.

This plant is starting to show some stress and a tiny amount of die off at two ends. Would this indicate more of a problem with water or with lack of nitrogen?

Looks like too little or too much water. Both have the same symptoms.

Remember, when a plant is listed as 'Drought tolerant' that means that it can take dry after it becomes established, in a year or two.

I agree it is not a nutrient issue. They just don't present that way. OTOH, water issues also don't tend to present at the branch tips on conifers either. Generally, you will see browning and loss of foliage/needles starting with the lower interior portion of the plant, then progressing upwards But I am more inclined to consider lack of sufficient water in this case than anything else.

Details on any soil amending and irrigation methods might confirm.

If you notice in the original picture, there appears to be some yellowing on same parts of the plant that are now browning. I don't know if that's relevant, like if some roots were broken from the seller. idk.

I have a couple spots and a dead branch on my mugo pine that I can only attribute to a Tom cat marking his territory with his urine. But that appears as a true brown color of the needles.

@BillMN-z4a Good catch on the dying sections being yellow in the original photo. Maybe there was root damage when they put this in a pot, and that is just playing out here.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) The soil was a combination of redwood compost and some commercial potting soil that was mostly composted garden waste and lots of organic fertilizers (FoxFarm Ocean Forest soil). I added less than 10% loamy clay soil to that and maybe some peat moss to acidify it a bit.

I am hand watering every other day until I can get drip irrigation in place. The soil is more dry than wet if I put my finger into it. On top of draining fast, I have Redwood tree roots climbing into that bed, which really drains the water out rapidly. I will try to add a mulch around this plant and that should at least preserve more moisture in the top layer of the soil.
