Siding colour and orientation for this converted garage

last modified: last month

Need help deciding on siding for this building!

Main house and small cottage house are both sided in a bone colour horizontal (both are seen in the photo). Plan on painting the brown trim and door, but not sure if we’ll ever end up painting the house, but am open to suggestions since I don’t love the colour.

Grey metal roofs, grey soffit, facia and eaves are newer and staying as is.

Barn has light grey, vertical metal siding that I doubt we‘ll ever change.

All 4 buildings are within view of each other.

Any suggestions for converted garage siding that will tie in with existing buildings or perhaps include painting horizontal siding on houses in the future?

I was leaning toward a very light grey vertical to tie in with the barn, but maybe it should look more like the house.

IMO all the living spaces should be the same and matching the barn would not enter my mind at all since I love red barns always .Where I live garages cannot be converted to livung spaces without huge issues with construction which i do not see happening here .Not sure what your doing with this building but is living space at least match it to the other houses .

I don’t see the harm in painting it a different color (whole thing vs 2 colors as it has now) until you are able to change the other two. Suggest a grey that complements to grey undertone in the other areas (can go bit lighter or darker). The trim on the house and garage could then be painted that same grey to somewhat help tie in the 3 buildings.

Good idea to match the trims. The three houses should be the same color combo so they look alike. the barn would be different.

This is a pretty barn in Sage Green and the trim would be gray, then it would tie in the gray trim on the houses.

Are you choosing a siding color or are you painting?

@Patricia Colwell Consulting thank you! that really helps and makes sense. yes, it will be additional living room area and storage.

@Maureen I was considering Satin Grey from Mitten for the siding or just white siding and white trim on all buildings, but using a grey trim is a good idea to tie them together with trim and door colour (thinking darker grey).

@Lyn Nielson Choosing siding. However, now that you say that im wondeirng if we can repair the patchy metal and possobly paint it. Would save a ton.

The gray is not very interesting, especially if you ever plan to change the siding on the other buildings. It looks like a generic utility shed.

I would think in terms of home colors, showing some personality.

Happy to go with horizontal siding for the converted garage, that makes sense!

What colour siding goes best with charcoal grey metal roof, soffit and facia? While also tying in with the very light tan of existing house siding? I would like it painted eventually, but thats a few years away.

Some house windows have white trim and some have brown, I’m leaning toward painting them all white due to the existing white trim ones. Doors are red currently and I’d like to change that to a very dark grey.

Or do you think painting trim and doors will make this light tan siding look better? And maybe I should just cover the garage in the same colour?

@Lyn Nielson thank you, I was wondering if it was too boring! Im just hoping to bring colour with flowers, bushes and wood gardens, but that may be not enough, espec especially in winter.

All colors go with your gray roof.

Any one of the samples on the board will work. They don't need to match anything, they go with the existing buildings.

The factory finish on the windows is white, will you be adding trim around the windows?

or just a channel that accespts the siding?

Please choose a dark color for the siding.

a vertical siding will make the building appear taller, but a horizontal siding looks traditional.

why not be different, not like everyone else.

Your future plantings will look great with a dark background.

@tracefloyd thank you so much for taking the time to read through and for your thoughtful and constructive comments. You gave me some very helpful information. Looking for low maintence, so painting vinyl siding every few years is not ideal. i would really like the existing colour to work. On the one side of the house there is only white trim, and as you can see, it doesn’t look too bad, just need some garden work.

From a distance the front of the house may look much better with white trim, neutral door colour and stained deck and more colourful flowers. thats all so helpful, thank you!

I will mockup using light tan on the garage and see how that feels, great suggestion!

@tracefloyd thank you for the rough sketch, I just saw that. That helps with visualizing.

Any suggestions for door colour? or just leave as is.

@Lyn Nielson thank you for your suggestion. Nice to hear that grey matches pretty much any colour, gives lots of flexibility.

The deck will be stained a wood-tone with reddish undertone, and the door is a nice rustic red so you're not adding another color. I would keep the red door and deck color as in my sketch...they look good together and with the gray, white and tan of the house.

Natural Cedar is a nice neutral stain color that adds a fresh wood look.

I have some mockups, the first is a close match to the current house siding, and the second is called Huron Blue from Mitten in vertical. I would paint the exterior doors on the house to match. Thoughts?

    1. Light Tan

    2. Huron Blue

The light tan makes the house look "off". The Huron Blue is beautiful and adds interest.

Thanks @tracefloyd, I would try to match the house better, will need to go out and get samples. Ideally, that garage would be the exact same colour as the house. Just a concept sketch. Thanks!

I'm not sure the conversion siding should match...it is a totally different architecture so play that up with the contrasting color.
