Replacing Damaged Masonite Siding

I have an exterior garage with water-damaged Masonite (X-90) siding. I've read that this siding is no longer available. The damage is mostly to the lower planks due to water splash, but there is some damage higher up, as well. Is it feasible to replace the damaged sections with Hardyboard? Are there better alternatives? I don't know if the current masonite boards are strong enough to withstand prying up to insert new boards. Do I need a siding expert or is it a job for a handyman? I appreciate any advice!

Issue is to really replace you need to take the pieces off in reverse order. Meaning start at the top. Especially with something with zero strength like Masonite siding, especially old Masonite siding. I would replace it all with vinyl.

Smooth hardi is the perfect dupe but budget for replacing all.

Have you considered replacing all of it with vinyl siding?

I have no complaints with Hardie Plank - I have it on my house - but maybe it's not worth the added cost for a garage?

I can only afford to replace the damaged sections, but it sounds like that is a difficult task. New vinyl is out of the budget, unfortunately. Sad...

As others suggested, to replace everything, if not, you can remove the bottom (2) rows and replace them with smooth hardi siding as @HALLETT & Co. suggested.

If you have a good handy man it probably could be done, replace some with hardy board. I've seen where some siding was replaced. They took a thin saw up the back side of a plank and sawed off the nail holding it in place, probably tedious work. Then the new one is put in place, maybe with adjustments to it's size to get it to fit. There maybe something on YouTube on how to do that.
