Sylvia, I think Umbra is great in heat. Mine are young but wonderful.

Beautiful photos. I wish I could share some, but even if most of my once-bloomers weren't already done, and IF I ever could remember to take a phone or camera into the garden, this has been absolutely THE worst year for black spot (and what looks like "damask crud", too!) and defoliation I've seen in 50 years of rose gardening. It rained at least every two to three days for all of April and May, sometimes for a week at a time. Forget spraying, even if I wanted to. So not only were the blooms mostly ruined, but the foliage wasn't up to making a runway appearance, lol. The one or two once-blooming roses that managed to eek out blooms timed just right to avoid storm damage (Celeste also kept her beautiful foliage until recently) were greatly appreciated. I have several teas that still look great, but we're talking about once-bloomers, so I'll just enjoy everyone else's photos. Post on, my friends!

I looked at HMF and saw Paul Barden reporting Umbra not liking heat. I think he is being modest. We get very hot here and his roses are doing fantastic. He is a wonderful breeder.

Maybe paul is talking about winter chill? These once bloomers usually need a cold winter to bloom well.

I'm sure Paul is thinking about that and it may be zone 9 and higher there is a problem, but not here.

I have Bermuda Spice, Marie Pavie, Grandmother's Hat and four rugosa hybrids but no photos as the ground squirrels have eaten any blooms and a good part of the foliage. Perhaps later in the year.......

Such beautiful and evocative pictures, everyone. No disrespect against the many lovely modern roses, but the old ones have my heart. Paul Barden is a true artist.

Madame Hardy may not have the largest blooms but they are exquisite, especially with that green center. Juno is gorgeous, front or back.

Rose Lai, I'm blown away by how many exquisite old rose varieties you have. Fantin Latour does not seem to grace too many private gardens these days. However, your collection of purple roses is truly an eye stopper.

Chris, thanks so much for initiating this thread, as Carol is apparently giving it a pass this year. Is she all right? I'm enjoying the photos, but have none to contribute myself: it's been a busy year in some ways, my energy is low, and our bloom is just wrapping up now, rather early. I didn't take any photos. I love these Magpie. I always loved the High Country Banshee rescue concept. I love all the crimson and all of them.

Thank you Sheila. High Country Banshee is one of my favorites. It blooms earlier than most, fragrant, beautiful, pollinators enjoy it, it makes hips, blueish foliage in spring, hardy as all get out. A bit thuggish, but it's worth the space, in my opinion. I love it. To me, it's irreplaceable in my garden.

The close-up of High Country Banshee is so dreamy and romantic. In truth, Magpie, all your roses are so unbearably beautiful. What a treat to see them here.
